Dartford Crossing Update (1 Viewer)

The latest from Highways England:
Progress
The final northbound road layout on the approach to the Dartford tunnels (A282 northbound) is now in operation. The lanes divide at junction 1a. Vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 (left hand lanes) can only use the west tunnel while vehicles in lanes 3 and 4 (right hand lanes) can only use the east tunnel. Vehicles joining at junction 1a can only access lanes 1 and 2 and use the west tunnel, which has a height restriction of 4.8m. For more information on lane and tunnel restrictions, please read section ‘Goods vehicles’ below.

All of the old payment booths and plaza have been removed now and a new traffic safety system is in operation, which allows us to:

• identify vehicles that may pose a safety risk, for example because they are oversized or carrying dangerous loads
• safely escort such vehicles through the tunnel – or turn them around
• stop vehicles entering the tunnels in the event of an incident

We previously performed these tasks when vehicles stopped at the payment booths.

We are now working to introduce the final southbound road layout, for traffic coming off the QEII Bridge. This includes the construction of a new retaining wall to support the new road alignment, ground strengthening and carriageway resurfacing and is expected to be complete by late July 2015.

That explains why two lanes were closed last Saturday for the work and I got caught in a traffic jam at midnight!
At least the end of the works is in sight now.

Am I right in thinking that lorries are being encouraged to use the outside lanes, that is, 3 and 4?
That seems to go against what is normally acceptable.

The newer tunnel is a fair bit higher than the original left one.

they are making enough out of false fines £250,000 till now.I had 3 charges on my account for the same trip and a couple of others that were duplicates its all a big mess
