I don't often use the reading lights in my van, one of the reasons that the switch is on the back of the bulb holder and gets hot when switching it off.
This week I leaned a cushion against one, not realising it had swiched the lamp on.
A few minutes later I smelt burning - it was the cushion.
I patched the hole with a piece cut from a small curtain in the sleeping area and noticed that 1 curtain was already missing. There were 2 other reading lamps there, behind the curtains.
I'm guessing one had already been burned before I bought the van.
I have now bought led replacements.
Did a bit of research and a child died last year in Derbyshire in a fire caused by a halogen bulb setting fire to a lampshade.
The sale of halogen bulbs was banned in September last year.

Well change the halogens for LED's - safer and use less power. Simples (y)
Get good quality LED replacements. My first lot came from Ebay. I had 2 catch fire. Stripped them out and replaced with some from Aten Lightning. All been good for over 6 years now.

It a bigger issue than it appears. The problem is not household stuff but speciality things in theatre, manufacturing and other areas where tungsten and halogen provide light at levels LED units cannot yet get too, and more importantly, at the correct colour temperature and spectrum. Under current EU and UK legislation these bulbs will be outlawed, hence various campaigns for exceptions. I know from tech forums that similar issues apply across the pond, and if you read the article carefully it mentions speciality bulbs. So.... Fanfare.. On this occasion I agree with Donald's action. Never thought I would say that. 🤔

All LED inside and all purchased from ATEN lighting. Being an American RV it had some funny bulbs in it but they sorted me out. :clap2: One of their best selling points is all their bulbs have a wide voltage range, so they are happy with whatever the battery, power supply, alternator etc throw at them.

I was doing the same until I realised it was cheaper to replace them because the new ones use so much less electricity. The compact fluorescents that are really dim until they warm up are going to one of the most short lived inventions.

This happened to us in our Rapido. There is a clear fronted drinks cabinete thing above the left hand side of the sink with the usual clear plastic shelves etc. There is a halogen uplight thing fitted to the bottom of this cabinette to uplight the shelves and look pretty. We never put glasses and bottles in it as its a crap design and a waste of space but, I did chuck a 12 pack of brand new micro fibre cloths in there when we left home. All fine then just as we were in the middle of yet another break ruined by yet another problem with the van (Webbs lack of van prep) we suddenly got a smell of burning ,it was in mid air and not coming from any of the heating stuff etc. This went on for a couple of days then suddenly got really bad. Turns out I had accidentally flicked the switch for the cabinette light which is next to a 240 volt socket. We had a lucky escape there, what a bloody ridiculous place to put a light, obviously it would only happen if you turned on the light which normally you wouldn't so a random warning smell.
The cloths were ruined and had they not been in a wad, would have definately cought fire, as it was they were just welded together. So on top of the stress of more ongoing problems with the van, we had this for two days as well!
Lovely time.:(

I think it was a light fitting possibly halogen ? That started the fire in Windsor castle in the Queens Annis horriblis.

I viewed a Laika about 10 years ago (nice vans) with a drop down bed. The bed had down lights fitted below - the lights had scorched the tops of both the driver and passenger seats - must have been left on when the bed was lowered
