Out of interest

Has any one kept a record of what it costs per day or week for the following in an A class M H

Trip to France or Spain

Using camp sites with EHU

Ferry costs included

Cooking own food with occasional meal out

Fuel costs included

Any other costs you had but i havnt listed

Im just trying to figure out what sort of money i have to save to spend a fair amount of time away when we eventually get a M H (hopefully this year) and get going.

Thanks Rich

I averaged around €36.50 a day in 2014 (Spain). However, the cost is very much dependent on the lifestyle you choose to have . Some will be much higher and some lower. Particularly, those wild camping.

Too many variables to say.

Cheap sites or all singing and dancing.

Ferry....from where to where and whenever .
Dover to Calais may be £100 return.
Portsmouth to Santander may be £1000

Cooking...around the same as at home.

Fuel cost.....how far are you going and what's your average MPG.

Other cost could include tolls...cost depends how far and on which tolls.

If the van doesn't have refillable gas bottles you will probably need to budget for local bottle/s and a regulator.

Not precise records, no. And although we have a coachbuilt, I think the costs would be similar, it is 7.3m long and 3.2 high.
Our normal summer tour takes us through many European countries, starting from Santander, and finishing in Calais.
Our ferry crossing this year, on the Pont Aven from Portsmouth to Santander in a Commodore cabin was £750ish. We spent about £100 onboard on meals and shopping.
Our campsite fees varied between €15 to €40 per night with EHU. We did stay at a few airres along the way this year.
Diesel varied in price from the cheapest in Andorra a smidge over €1 per litre with Switzerland and Italy being the most expensive, around €1.90 a litre.
We found that finding local butchers etc, and then having a BBQ was the best and most economical eating. However the restaurants in Italy were superb on the whole, and not expensive if you follow the simple rule when abroad, eat where the locals eat, not where the tourists are.
Stocking up on the essentials we tend to do in places like Lidl or Aldi.
Our total expenditure this year was roughly £3,000, and we were away for 30 days, so £100 per day including ferry and all the stuff we bought, that was not essential :).

You can easily work out your own budget as you know the parameters which will affect your costs. Time of year, length of trip, mileage to be travelled, which ferry.

Your wish to use sites with EHU will have a big effect on your costs, could add £10 to £15 a day on average. Last Feb/Mar we toured Italy, including Sicily, for 60 days at an average site cost of £6.4 a night. From free to £16 a night.

Havn't kept any records, but we reckon to spend less on a 3mth trip to France or Spain than if we were at home.
Probably because we aren't socialising as much and not using household utilities.

For what it's worth, all my costs were recorded for each daily spend. Hence the Ave. of €36.50.

Yes I did a log of our recent trip. I was a financial inclusion officer for the Welfare Rights team at Suffolk County Council before I took early retirement in April to travel. For that reason the finances were very important as we're too young for a pension.
Thank you Deb for sharing the link, hopefully it's some help to people.:xThumb:

I wouldn't look into it too much, before we had a motorhome we were tied to package holidays and for a fortnight in the sun for a family of 4 with spending money we were looking at around £3000
Our last trip to the south of France came in at £1500 for 3 weeks all in.A mixture of 4 star campsites with pools for the kids and a bit of free camp stops .We ate what we wanted when we wanted and drank heartily ,we also treated the kids to horse riding and boat trips!
This was all done out of season on an acsi card last 2 weeks of May first week of June. The primary school were good on us and only reported one child to the la ,so we paid a fine of £160 on top of the holiday!
I'm surprised costs are an issue to you ,unless you just borrowed the car in your avatar!

The wife doesn't spend more than she has too :xsmile:

Im a tight git and and always look for the bargain :xgrin:

The reason i included campsites was too look at worst case scenario

We don't tend to do expensive holidays and it will be just the two of us.We are happiest just being somewhere so we can explore on our own.

Looks like ill have to sell some body parts for when we are on the off :xrofl:

Well richr seeing as it's just the two of you ,the best advice I can give is to travel off peak.If you do this and buy an acsi card you'll save a fortune! Enough for a good few track days .

We seem to average ABOUT € 25 a day in winter and and € 35 in summer
There is also the point that the longer you are away the lower the average daily spend ..

Do some research Richr , Brittany for example has hundreds of Aire's that you can stay on for free or a few (4-6) Euro's a night. Go onto a camp site (Municipal) to top up your batteries (get at least two and a decent Solar panel) and use washing machines. You can do that in much of France and for some people there is no need to go elsewhere. (France is brilliant).
Before you buy, ask questions on here. The amount of information held by members is phenomenal (as is the amount of utter shite that occasionally crops up LOL).
Just ask away as you have already dome and you will be looked after.

We went to france for 5 weeks last year with £1000 on a euro card, and apart from tolls, and odd self service petrol stations, where the card wouldn't work just about scraped home on it, so we aren't far off jaws estimate. We did go on a couple of acsi sites just to do the washing and stuff but mostly aires and a couple of nights on a friends drive. Mostly cooked in van but did go out for meals maybe 3 nights a week , but some days we didn't spend a penny .

1994 and beyond...
all I know is that when wifes looked at a flight based holiday over christmas, the cost caused me so much anguish that I nearly had heart failure!

for what a week costs somewhere I can live comfortably for 6 weeks or so somewhere warm!:(

its easy enough to work out cost of journey (fuel, ferry + site fees). food as at home, eating out and all the rest up to you....

On and off for many years.
Not an answer to your question but in the UK we budget £50 a day for two for a weekend - that is without a meal out and buying all our food / fuel locally and includes site fees. We like CL sites but always have EHU. If the site fees are a bit expensive we buy less locally.

If going abroad would budget the same plus ferry plus an extra 10 or 20% just in case. Rather have money over than not enough.

We spent the autumn of last year touring through France, Spain and Portugal. Ate out a fair bit, stayed on a site with EHU most nights and really enjoyed ourselves.

Cost worked out around £1000 per month for everything (y)

true

and enjoying yourself need not cost ..

when we just met we were skint, but went away with a pup tent , two sleeping bags and fifty quid.. toured the Highlands for 10 days and had a great time..

We can eek out a small budget

I know you don't have to spend a fortune to enjoy yourself unfortunately you don't seem to be able to live on just fresh air these days as even that is taxed :)

The wife doesn't do tents either
