Hi.

Although we are fairly seasoned ex-caravanners we have always used China plates and bowls in the past. Is melamine a better option?

WE use all metal/enamel apart from drinking glasses and china mugs. Enamel means you can warm them in the oven and even cook in them! And they are not heavy, and are currently back in fashion, lots of stores selling them.

It's why we went for the Corelle stuff as it's oven and microwave proof plus if it's been sitting in the MH for a bit of time it's happy being poached in the dishwasher.

I don't think Corelle is light, like Melamine, although it is quite durable. There's a wide choice of shapes and patterns but an even wider choice if you choose china. I think china may be a little more robust than pottery, also lighter. We've not managed to break any, yet, but (whole) pieces can be purchased individually.

Another vote for the third way: tempered glass.

Bought some cheapo tempered glass plates in a Spanish hypermarket after we smashed our china ones -- French made, marked 'ARC' on the base.

They look like china and feel pretty much the same (especially in white).
They are much thinner than china and hence way lighter.
They are much more robust than china.
They feel like real crockery unlike melamine.

I think the Corelle cups/mugs are made from a different material. Same pattern, to match the rest, but something more stain resistant.

They're usually just standard ceramic.

I seem to remember seeing/hearing/reading something along the lines of Corelle not being used because pieces can't be joined together so if they used it mugs would have no handles.

Corelle for me anytime - much prefer to melamine. However the mugs are pottery and not the same material as the rest of the crockery, but are pattern matched.

We use doubled up disposable plastic plates when in touring mode but always have the butter dish, butter knife and jam spoon packed. Cups/mugs depend on what’s to hand; glasses have to be ... glass :)

I went over a massive pothole in the road. A few seconds later a plate came rolling up into the the driving area and stopped under the clutch pedal. CRAP I had not closed the crockery cabinet properly. My fault but the melamine plate is still in use. I like the sound of CORELLE though. Where do I get it?

Another vote for Corelle. Good choice on Amazon or your local Caravan/Motorhome accessory shop. Bone chine for cups and real glass for wine/beer/spirits

You can get tempered glass dinner plates, side plates and bowls from Ikea. It's what we use. Bought them a few years ago and the cost just 50p per item. No idea how much they are now but would still be considerably cheaper than Correlle.

PS just checked the Ikea website and still 50p per item.

I've never heard of Corelle so I looked it up. Looks very good. Anyone else tried it?

It made the same way as the old windscreens which means if you break one they explode all over the place. Not a happy thought so ours went in the bin. Back to the old way with enamel plates. They are light, don’t scratch, don’t rattle and you can make great plate pies using them. Mugs we use ordinary ones from supermarket.

Corelle gets our vote. Great stuff and goes in the dishwasher. Only issue is they can’t make cups out of it so have Morelo China mugs.

We bought a few sets years ago and it was quiet expensive. Friend was recently telling me you can but plates of similar construction in the pound shop

We are using a set of melamine cups and plates at the moment that are normally sold as a box-set at most caravan and motorhome dealers. The plates are ok but the cups suffer badly from tea stains after a few days of use and that’s with us washing them in Fairly Liquid after every use.

Long time
I used Melamine, it’s ok but scratches easily and the mugs stain.
Now have Corelli, been using it for about 8 years now and not a scratch in site, use Bone China mugs-they’re tougher than you think!
