Hi.

Although we are fairly seasoned ex-caravanners we have always used China plates and bowls in the past. Is melamine a better option?

We've tried both and are currently using melamine. It's lighter, especially when I carry it to a dishwashing area, otherwise we don't notice any difference. I suppose it's unbreakable as well if that counts.

We’d always used china (cheap from Ikea, so easy to replace) but changed over to a melamine set from Lakeland last year. Quite attractive, a lot lighter, time will tell on durability.

Drop a china plate or mug on your worktop and you’ll wish you had bought melamine! Downside is that melamine discolours and does not resist knife-cuts, which makes discolouration worse, but it is cheap enough to replace regularly.

There was some testing done in the USA on melamine which discovered that the chemicals in the melamine can bleed out into the food on the plate, believe what you will just saying.

Yes I saw that too @BILL 875
Think it had something to do with who made it. Sadly us shoppers don’t know good from bad as it all look the same. That said we use it but have real glass for wine haha

We like corelle, however I bought two bigger bowls from Ikea for 50p and they are just as good, it's tempered glass. Our corelle set was plain white so perfect.
Corelle is quite light and hardwearing, can't bear cutting food on melamine, sets my teeth on edge.

Now, how do I stop it rattling about when I'm driving?

We use Ikea OFTAST plates and bowls (basically their version of Corelle) - the plates fit perfectly in a wire plate rack which came with the MH, and the bowls are simply stacked with small bits of non-slip matting in between.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
I use the same crockery and glassware in the MH as at home. I haven't broken anything.... yet! :D
Me too. Proper crockery. Wouldn't dream of drinking St. Emilion from anything but a proper wine glass.
Had to suffer Melamine along with Camp coffee, Walls Skinless Sausages, Vesta packet curries and temperamental Primus stoves when tenting back in the 60's.
Ugghh!

look at the ikea stuff we got it 2 years ago its a similar thing to corelle (toughened glass) at a fraction of the cost and you can buy singles so get whatever set you want we put layers of packaging between the plates ikea do a similar thing in a daisy pattern to put between frying pans.

With melamine it depends on the quality a lot of the modern stuff is rubbish, our melamine set is 26 years old and still going strong just see light scratches on it when holding is at an angle to the light.

We have British melamine mugs, but they leak:)

Proper china for us, and real glasses. When we get home it all goes through the dishwasher :)

We already had white IKEA china we used for camping / leisure so that got put into the motorhome.

We have patterned Corelle small plates large plates and bowls and love it. It’s very light and looks like china. When travelling we stack them with paper plates in between - always done it that way but perhaps we will try leaving them stored in the racks in the top cupboards when travelling - obviously don’t want rattling as we drive along.

We are using a set of melamine cups and plates at the moment that are normally sold as a box-set at most caravan and motorhome dealers. The plates are ok but the cups suffer badly from tea stains after a few days of use and that’s with us washing them in Fairly Liquid after every use.
