Has anyone taken the E71 just north of Zadar via the Plitvice Lakes to Karlovac. We are travellng from Split to Ljubljana and not sure whether to take this route across country or stay on the A1 toll road. Advice on the state of the E71 is what we are after.

Hi. I used that road last year (the other way, ie going south) no problems. Whilst mine is only a small van there were plenty of larger ones using it. The only trouble I had was the day I wanted to look at the lakes the weather was crap.

We have travelled quite a lot in Croatia and never once used a toll road ( that I can remember ).. In fact the sights and sounds of the true nature of the country would be sadly missed if we went on the big roads !
