Currently in Slovenia and heading for Croatia tomorrow - reading Lonley Planet book Novigrad / Porec area looks good for a first stop.

any suggestions for sites and then places inland to move to afterwards?

eventually going to Krk island then further south!

Last autumn we visited Camp Stoja in Pula and Jezevac in Krk. Both sites were convenient for their respective towns, and both towns had lots of interest. Both sites were on the coast and you paid a premium for a waterfront pitch.
They were fairly conventional "full facility" sites though we were there right at the end of the season and not everything was open. Camp Stoja was a little "tired" in places, there were definite hints of the old communist workers holiday camp from days gone by. Jezevac was more modern but with lots of chalet type camping and it was busier at the weekend.
Stoja was a cycle ride to the town centre, and there was a bus stop right outside. The Roman amphitheatre is stunning. Jezevac is just a stroll from a charming old town with harbour.
We enjoyed both sites and Croatia as a whole although it was windy in late September. The Plitvice lakes are well worth a detour and a day tour but it was torrential rain when we were there. We'll go back!
