Still in the planning stages for our trip to Croatia this summer but it looks like we will end up there in August ( Schengen Shuffle reasons ) . What are folks experiences of Croatia in August given that it’s the busiest time of the year, is getting onto sites very difficult and do you have to pre-book well in advance.

Have been in June and based upon that, I would definitely book and well in advance

We were there for the southern German school holidays one year in May/June, I think, not Easter. The campsites were booked with 1000’s of families in caravans as it is only a days drive for them direct.

We got a pitch but had our options of which one we preferred severely reduced as they actually booked specific pitches, we went around with a booklet showing which was free on which dates then headed back to reception pronto to book it in case someone was doing the same.

The size of the site meant it could easily be a 20+ min walk, I picked about 3 in the Hope one was free of the new arrivals who were queuing at reception. That was at Rovinj.

Many have accommodation too, like hotels, so facilities are stretched but on the pitch it was fine but showers often taken. They had plenty of small blocks around so it was just a walk to find a vacant one. Then they all left and all was quiet again 😜

We did not move for the duration of the holiday, 2/3 weeks, for fear of not getting in somewhere having left our previous 2 sites because they were fully booked and we had to move! One at Krk and the other at Pula. Taught me to always check the school holidays in future, especially the German ones as all together they overlap each area by weeks not days.

However all the sites we have stayed on, particularly in Istria, are massive and grass so able to accommodate many vans. I think one had well over 1000 pitches!

The upside was we absolutely loved it 😊

I can only guess August would be similar so I would definitely book

So if it is like that in May/June and August might be worse, then wildcamping is illegal I think Croatia is out for us and we could spend the site fees on a ferry to Greece.

Thanks for the warning.

What would it be like for September and October? Was hoping to go then.

Yes it is very popular with the Italians, especially the Istrian area and very close for them.

My friends used to go at the very end of August and I don’t think they had a problem at all but I think it starts getting cooler earlier than Spain so we only go there in the May/June and save Spain for the autumn. I know they came home earlier than we would.

Went once in July, it was way too hot so we left after 2 days for the Dolomites to cool off.

If you go, don’t bother with Dubrovnik!

Full of nothing but restaurants, gift shops, cruise ships and people!

I'd probably keep away from the Istria and Krk in July/September. We head further south where it is less crowded and cheaper. Heading down the E65 towards Zadar, Split etc. Other way to do it is go to Ancona for the ferry to Split then work your way up.

Here is a link to the German school holidays.
Don't assume that all the German schools are on holiday at the same time like UK, thats not the case. The Germans stagger the start and end of the holidays by region. This is to try to cut down on congestion. A clever idea.

I found Croatia ok at end of May through June. Good weather, not packed out and plenty of availibility on campsites.
It was July onwards it got very busy, sites booked up and also very expensive campsites, I think £60/70 pn was quite common in July August but I'd left by then, so that's only hearsay

Edit : that was 2018 and '19

Sounds great. If you have not done the lakes before we found the best way was to buy tickets online and get there as soon as it opens at 7. I've not been that far down on Krk, but looks good. Have only stayed in an apartment near Trogir so don't know anything about campsites. We have stayed at a couple of places on the coast road E65, Kamp Platanza in Starigrad is good. Have fun.
