Creating .GPX Route files

    I would appreciate advice on the best way to create routes with numerous waypoints which I can then import into my Tomtom unit which now accepts .gpx files.

    You could try creating a .kml file in Google Earth and then use POIConverter to convert it to .gpx.

    Try GPSies.com, produced gpx files directly, no conversions needed.
