Next Tuesday 22 July I'm setting off from Meriden (geographical centre of England) and pedalling the 500 or so miles to Bruere-Allichamps (its French counterpart). I wasn't originally intending to do it as a fundraiser, but having done two previous similar rides for charity, it's a hard habit to break. Anyway, it's now decided, and I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support - if you want to know why, and perhaps find a fiver to help, visit www.justgiving.com/center2centre

Thanks for reading

best wishes

On and off for many years.
A really worthwhile cause and you are well on the way to meeting your target - hope you exceed it by a long way.

Thanks all. Timetable is as follows: leave on Tues 22/7 and return from Poitiers (100 miles from Bruere-Allichamps) on Sunday 5/8. May take three days to get to Newhaven as I 'm finding my pedalling legs to begin with! Will try and keep you posted via smartphone updates on here and Twitter (@ericonabike)

JULY 2013
Two cyclists who died after being struck by a lorry during a charity ride from Land's End to John O'Groats have been named.
Andrew McMenigall, 47, and Toby Wallace, 36, were killed in the crash on the A30 in Cornwall on Tuesday.
Mr McMenigall, from Edinburgh, was a senior investment manager with Aberdeen Asset Management. He was married with two daughters.
Colleague Mr Wallace worked in the firm's Philadelphia office.
The 31-year-old driver of the lorry involved in the crash near Summercourt was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

I will get shouted down for this but I wish cyclists would not put their lives at risk by taking on such ambitious ventures.

So many die raising money for good causes.

I have personal reasons for being very grateful to Macmillan and have made donations direct.

I will never sponsor a cyclist on a charity ride unless on a closed track or at a velodrome.

If anything happened to a cyclist I'd sponsored I would feel partly responsible.

I hope that all goes well for ericonabike.

So Eric, which would you like? A fiver to your charity or your funeral fund?

Le Petit Depart: Meriden 09.00 today. There should have been a photo to illustrate it but don't know how to do that from smartphone :-(

Woohoo! Je suis arrive (please insert accent!). Am at Bruere-Allichamps, centre of France, nine days and 543 miles after setting off from Meriden, centre of England. One broken chain, no pun*tu*es and I'm not dead! Had a lovely time and raised £515 (so far) for Macmillan. Many thanks for Funster support, donations still welcome at the url at start of this thread (apologies, dunno how to paste or post pics here using smartphone).

You weren't, but you should have been. :) What a silly statement. An unfortunate motorhomer died on the A31 this week. Should we all stop motorhoming?

I can't see the connection between an ambitious cycle ride and motorhoming.

I have my own view on charity rides and am saddened that any should die, especially for good causes.

I posted a like when Eric reached 500k and I am glad he finished safely.

I can't see your point I'm afraid. Everything has a danger element to it, we shouldn't stop doing stuff because of it or we'd never cross a road.

The deaths of Andrew McMenigall, 47, and Toby Wallace, 36 last year on the A30 at the beginning of a charity ride from Lands End to John o Groats has stuck in my mind.

Two well-meaning family men killed on a dual carriageway by a truck and others killed or injured riding for charity before and since.

Cycling on busy roads is dangerous as it is and I would not be happy sponsoring any rider, whether for charity or not.

Motorhoming on the other hand is probably less dangerous than driving a car
