I really don’t like this type of headline

100% rise is actually from a modest 5p to 10p and only applies outside of any agreed bundle so will only affect those that have bought the wrong plan ?

phones are so relatively cheap these days I am amazed more firms don’t give up or go bust

Ah you're using one in a tracker
Was wondering because wasn't sure who actually pays for texts anymore, we have a monitored alarm/tracker so we pay for the privilege but on our phones haven't paid for texts for years (now on unlimited EVERYTHING for £20 a month)

It shouldn't really matter if you are using it in a tracker or not. Just buy the appropriate goody bag and you won't ever run out. Charges will only apply if no active goody bag. I have one in my inet box and only have to top up £6 every 3 month. I love their packages.

Basically they are sticking two fingers up to PAYG customers.

I know it doesn’t apply to most people on here, but the main reason people opt for PAYG is they don’t want a monthly subscription (or can’t afford it). As usual it’s the people at the bottom of the pile who get shafted. So those people will need to move.

No matter what the cost, a 100% increase (and 67% for calls) is steep by anyone’s standards.

but if they already charged 10p a 5p increase would only be 50% is that better ?

or had they done it for a penny and upped it to 5p that would be 500% but still very cheap

not arguing with you just pointing out that numbers make headlines, facts don’t always look as dramatic ?

My Giff Gaff Tracker, actually costs nothing as it it only ever connected to by giff gaff phone. G_G to G_G is Free!. I would only pay full cost IF I used the Wife`s E-E or the Mi Fi (Sky). It was loaded with £15-00 when fitted to the previous Rapido, 2014. It still has £12-96 left!.

I use giffgaff exclusively for phone purposes. I buy an 8quid goodbag, gives me unlimited texts n 250 uninstall time plus some data that I never use. Excellent package. Incidentally I use EE 20quid for 30gig data mifi for all internet.

What does it really cost giffgaff to transmit a SMS?

Probably such a miniscule amount that the 10p is 99.99% admin + profit.

thats ignoring the original infrastructure and maintenance cost

How long ago was the 2G infrastructure cost amortised?

They have 3G, 4G and now 5G infrastructure to carry vast quantities of data. SMS is a tiddly amount of data by comparison. Barely noticable extra traffic on the networks.

There is no contract or 'plans' on GiffGaff.
You buy airtime credit then have the option to buy a bundle if you want.
If you're a low user it pays to buy credit and use it...it doesn't expire.
If you're a high user then a bundle is best.

3s PAYG is much better value.
Airtime credit is charged at 1p Mb data, 2p text and 3p voice call.
It doesn't expire.
3p per minute on 3 or 25p per minute on GiffGaff.
I know which I'll stay with.
