Insurance due, renewal notice arrived on checking I noticed (perhaps should have spotted earlier!) that up to a max of 2k for glass is quoted. Can anyone offer an estimate of the cost of a replacement of a Hymer A class 544SL 2007?

Many thanks.

Probably nearer £2,500-£3,000 or more.

They often have clauses for a limit unless you use their authorised repairers in which case it's normally unlimited.

Comfort windscreen cover unlimited I believe, up to the value of the van.
I had a B 524 windscreen a few years ago and it was over £2000 then.

Had our Hymer done last September the screen was just over £2k (net price) plus labour.

We have a policy with A-Plan/Motor Direct which has unlimited on windscreen using their repairer, otherwise £1,000 after excess:

If you phone the Ageas Insurance Glassline on 0800
174764 and use one of our chosen glass companies, cover
is unlimited. If you do not, the most we will pay under this
section is £1000 after taking of any excess.

£2k won’t be anywhere near enough for most A class vans.
We had 3 replacement screens over a short period on our Carthago.
A class vans seem to be a magnet for stones.

Yes, windscreen cover is now unlimited with Comfort insurance. Great claims service as well (not a windscreen claim.....)

I seem to remember the Autoglass fitter saying the screen was over £3k.
Fitting on top of that I presume.
I have heard tales of Carthago screens costing up to £5k.
I insisted that they ordered a genuine OEM screen made by Bertone.

I have just renewed my insurance with Comfort. It is unlimited windscreen cover if you use their authorised repairer. However, they do not have an authorised repairer in the rest of Europe so max £3k.

Mine was replaced approx 5y ago for just under £3k.

Adrian Flux only cover £1k but will quote for Aclass (and probably hope that you don't notice AND don't need the replacement). I have moaned at them!

I think you have been unlucky.

We have had our 19 year-old MH for 12 years and I think it has not needed a new screen ever, only one chip which was repairable.

Do you drive fast, as then a small stone might have more effect? We never exceed 65mph.

I asked for an oem Hymer screen
After an unhappy episode with more than 2 x patterned part screens, I too insisted on an OEM screen, which came from Pilkingtons.

The fitters admitted that they prefer original screens, as they seldom have problems with them. It cost around £2.5K. :whatthe:

Cheers,

Jock. :)

My heated screen on the Hymer was over £3k. Autoglass Specials Division were excellent. When looking at it, the guy from Autoglass rang Travelworld with the serial number off the van, sorted it all out, he knew what he was doing. Fitters had another A class vans to do the same day as mine, no issues.

Be very careful.
A few years ago I insured my American RV (can't remember who) and screen cover was listed in the policy as 'unlimited'.
It was only when I read the small print it meant no limit on number of claims and nothing to do with unlimited value.
From memory it was something like £1500.....considering it was a split screen and each half was the wrong side of £3000 it wasn't suitable
I rang and cancelled for a full refund.
When I pointed out why they had to agree it was deceptive and needed changing.

But Comfort isn’t one. If you have a broken windscreen in, for example, France then you are only covered to £3k.

SAGA Motorhome Policy.
NFU.

If NFU did Breakdown Cover for MHs, we wouldn't have had to change over to SAGA. :(

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Autoglass told me the cost would be over £3 K when they replaced my Hymer Ensis I screen last year. Good job it was covered by Comfort insurance.

Thanks Lenny. However, I do not have that wording in my policy. I specifically asked them about Europe and was told by Comfort that they did not have an authorised repairer there.

Yes, we had that experience in our Hymer 584 in 2018. Screen went in Spain, Comfort said Autoglass didn’t provide A class screens there or France, but could I drive to Portugal where it did ! Eventually I ordered a screen directly from Hymer itself for fitting by one of their dealers. I paid up front, it arrived in 10 days and Comfort reimbursed me within 24 hours. Mind you we were full time them, so simply sat waiting on an aire before driving to the dealer. Things may have changed now.
