Correct Tyres Pressures? (1 Viewer)

Hi, I would be very interested to know what sort of Tyres Pressures you guys run at in your 3500kg Motorhomes? Even Quickfit who just fitted some new Michelin Aquilas Camping Tyres (215/70 R15 ) were confused. They contacted Michelin and they couldn't come up with anything definite. In the end they put 4.25bar (62psi) in the front and 5.5bar (80psi) in the rear. We're off to Spain in a few weeks and will be travelling at max load, so I wondered if anybody had any suggestions or recommendations or indeed experiences that would be helpful. Our Motorhome is a 2009 Swift Bolero Multijet Engine. 3500kgs. Fiat Ducato based.

I believe all Michelin are ever going to say for the rear axle is 80psi, other than that you would need axle weights to make any sort of guess.

You must get it weighed in ready to set off condition with all people on board, so you know the front and rear axle weights. You won’t get any sense out of Michelin regarding pressures. Continental do a technical data book, available on line, that gives the correct pressures according to tyre size/index.
I was able to lower my pressures considerably after weighing and checking the data book.
We now run at 4 bar rear and 3.25 bar front, making a real difference to comfort and noise. Don’t take any notice of my pressures though, do your own calculations after weighing.

They will be 109 load rating which will give you 2060kg on the axle at maximum pressure.

If it was my van I would drop it pro rata to the actual weight.

We have a Hymer Exsis 4250kg when fully loaded and towing car trailer run at 4.5 front and 5.5 rear seems to work for us and certainly not harsh ride, however we are close to our Limits.

My 7500kg RV ran at 80psi in all 6 tyres.
My feeling is the same pressure in something half the weight and tyres 3/4 the size is going to be a bit hard and bumpy.

Continental VancoCamper tyres have 69 psi on the side wall but it is not marked as being the maximum psi.
If this is the rated maximum psi and your running the 80 psi that's recommended for rear axle weights around the 2000Kg mark, then how are insurance companies going to react to the tyres being over the manufactures stated limit ?

Without actually checking actual weights from my motorhome I doubt you would exceed 1600 kg on the front so 62 psi and 2000 kg on the rear at 80 psi would be not far out ?

My Vanco camper 16 inch are quoted at 79 psi on the plate interest not looked at max inflation on the side of tyre though .

The max pressure shownon a tyre is only valid in the USA, don't ask why haven't a clue but it's true.

70 front 80 rear. Roughly in line with the 'van's manufacturer's spec but checked with other online resources. There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice about.

I wrote the pressures on the inside of the wheel arches with a permanent marker to remind myself.

Are there any insurance implications, with running at pressures not defined by the manufacturer?

Presumably only if the tyre pressures were found to be a directly contributable factor in an insured loss. Seems unlikely for any reasonable pressures.
mmmm that could be fun, considering they are the only things in contact with the road - how would you prove they were not, if the insurance company said they were - interesting????
