Hi,

We've got 6 days in Cornwall in mid-August. Stopping at a site very close to the Bedruthan Steps.

Can anyone recommend any nice sights/things to do in the area?

We've never been to Cornwall before, so any hints will be gratefully received :)

Thanks

Simon

Hi, Are you stuck at that one site or do you have transport to go elsewhere?

Hi Simon,
It really depends on what you like to do.
Are you surfing dudes? Ramblers? (y)Beach people?:cooler:
Give us a bit more info and I am sure we can get some recommendations for you. (y)

I live in the area but as said above we need a bit more info to make recommendations. Do you have a car as well (Or hiring one) or do you want to use the motorhome if so what size is it. or use buses etc.
How far do you want to go from Bed steps area.

I've got a VW T5 Camper, so we intend on using the van every day. We don't mind driving for 1-2 hours on the odd day, but would prefer to keep to less than an hour if possible.

Not surfers. Not Ramblers either. Although we don't mind a light stroll (upto 2-3 miles). The short break is aimed to be relaxing for us, so we don't want to try and cram one million things into the trip :)

Nice towns, with good food, and a few random attractions would be right up our streets. We would prefer to stick to the coasts though, as we all love the sea air.

One thing we definitely will be doing one morning is popping to Land's End (just because neither of us has been before). So anywhere we could visit on the way back between Land's End and Bedruthan would be fantastic.

Not much at Lands End, so be prepared for a short visit.

Check out the Minack Theatre and see if there is anything on, plus also the Eden centre. Marazion is worth a look for St Michaels Mount. St Ives is very crowded and (diplomatic hat on here......) not to everyone's tastes

As the Duck said Minack Theatre, just because Porthcurno is my favourite beach in the whole UK. and has been since I was 10 years old, so nearly thirty years........

Up the coast a few miles to Treyarnon Bay, yet another favourite.

Kynance cove near the Lizard is a striking beach but could be crowded in August and you need to go near low tide but still worth a visit. It is owned by the NT and the walk down (and up!) to the beach is a good leg stretch but not too demanding.

Well, as has been said, there is not much at Lands End although Sennen Cove is worth a visit.
Also there is the seal sanctuary at Gweek
Padstow is nice but will be very busy in August.
Most of the seaside towns are old and quite pretty but some have been quite heavily commercialised.
Hope you enjoy your trip.

Avoid Newquay! St Michaels Mount is worth a trip, Lizard is good, nice coast path walks, plus get an Ann's Pasty from the Lizard Pasty Shop. Lands End commercialized but suggest going to Sennen Cove & walking around the coast path to there & back, on a good day you can see the Isles of Scilly.
Speaking of which, perhaps a day trip on the Scillonian to the islands? Mousehole is perhaps worth a visit but it gets very busy, leave car outside village on road from Newlyn & walk in. Lost gardens of Heligan worth a visit as well.
Have a nice time.

If you are camping at the Inn At Bedruthan (or the Caravan Club CL in behind) then it is a short walk across the road to a lovely National Trust concession cafe which does excellent homemade food & a great view from the garden of the Bedruthan Steps beach & cliffs which are just a short walk along a footpath. The Inn is good for food but expensive. Pretty hairy going up & down the Steps but beautiful beach although watch the swift incoming tide anytime after 3pm. The coast path runs all along here (bit near the edge of the cliff edge :(at times) & Mawgan Porth (another fab beach) is a relatively easy walk away. We stayed at the Inn & it is fine (apart from a bit of road noise) with very helpful new owners but would recommend the approach past Newquay airport for larger motorhomes as coming from Padstow the other way via St Merryn was narrow & windy in places. We love Sennen in good weather but relatively narrow beach that gets packed in high season - especially when the tide comes in! Padstow has a park & ride & a very busy harbour area but great shops for foodies - best thing is if you walk to the far side (left if facing sea) of the harbour there is a scenic footpath that takes you to the beaches at the side of the estuary but no facilities for miles (public loos in harbour) so good idea to take drinks! Camel Trail starts from Padstow harbour (right hand side) too so again busy so maybe not ideal for walkers but good for cyclists as gets quieter further on. We love that area of Cornwall & not such a problem for campervans but motorhomes watch out for overhanging greenery & branches on the road edges especially with the often narrow roads.:frowny:

Minack before/ after Lands End it's just a hop away, I think you will be disappointed by Lands End, IMO it's tacky, the Lizard is a far better sight to see especially on a wild day, Eden Project for the money you pay (£23) is not my cup of tea.

Looe, Polperro, Fowey, are tired and full of tourist tat

Falmouth, if you go use the park and ride (if the tide is right, park and float) For a fiver it's value for money and vertually hassle free. Pendennis Point at Falmouth is well worth a visit just for the scenery From Falmouth you can get a ferry to St Mawes
Parking here in Cornwall is expensive

On the B3276 at MAWGAN PORTH there is a pub called "The Merrymoor"
Brilliant food and a damn good pint, as you come down the hill from Newquay, there is a very sharp right hander, the pub is on the right just past there, there is a charge for parking but they'll knock it off your meal
Bacon, cheese and Mushroom Bagette that they serve is awesome!

Truro is ok for shops but parking is the problem with anything larger than a car, but! there is a Park and Ride at Threemilestone (A390)

Enjoy your trip(y)

The local bus goes along the road where you are staying. Try Padstow via bus...runs every hour. Good scenic views on the way couple of pints outside the Shipwrights Inn...nice food ..lovely....don't have to worry about drink driving ....parking is a nightmare in August.

Also the Lewinick Inn just on the edge of Newquay. Set into a cliff fab views great food.

Hope this helps

Yep the Lewanick is fabulous, get a table at the far end by the window, you are on top of a cliff. Food excellent.

Thanks for all your responses and suggestions. Whilst away it soon became obvious that we didn't really have enough time to do lots of exploring.

So, in no particular order we did the following:

Visited Padstow. Twice. Went to the Lobster Hatchery, and had an overpriced lunch at Rick Steins
Visited Newquay. Spent a couple of hours shopping, had a pint, and chilled out at Fistral Beach.
Visited Penzance and St Michael's Mount. Stopped off at Healey's Cyder Farm on the way :)
Had a look at the Bedruthan Steps. Didn't go down them though.
Visited Porth Mawgan by taxi, and did the pub quiz in the Merrymoor. Great pub for food.
A couple of days we just stopped on the small site at the Inn at Bedruthan relaxing.

I'm going to go for two weeks next year!

Oh, just to add. Had no problems parking in Padstow at all. There were designated 'Campervan Parking' bays :)

Narrow roads !! Just arrived at Tintagel this afternoon to find a large branch wedged into the awning but can't see any other damage

This isn't mine, but another T5 parked in said space.

Plenty of room I reckon, as a SWB T5 is just under 5 metres long :)
