Cork ~ aire or campsite near (1 Viewer)

First timers to Ireland and not yet familiar with how it works. We're looking for a campsite or Aire somewhere up to 50km south or south west of Cork on the coast.

We're all set up for Cork itself, we will use the one at Blarney and the Aire at Cobh, but would prefer a strong recommendation for one on the coast please, the prettier the better.

The site at Blarney is fine, last there about 18 months ago. I would always use this for Cork City visits

How did you get into Cork city from there, what was the best option?

Still looking for somewhere (typically Irish?) on the coast between Cork and say Skibbereen as most of our stay in Ireland will be away from the coast.

Was on campsite at Blarney2 weeks ago, nice site but 2 mile walk to village along a dangerous main road uphill all the way back but we did it twice and survived. If you go to castle OAP rate is 10 Euros each, we asked for this rate and got it without having to give them proof.:thumb:
You can pick up a free campsite guide from tourist information which we found very useful. We did not find the country motorhome friendly as most car parks and picknick areas have height barriers. One exception which was in a very nice location was Dingle which charges 1 Euro an hour and it is possible to park easily vans up to 8m long.

You can drive down to the castle car park and then catch a bus or as Polar Bear has said you can walk down to the bus stop, 1st option best

Take a look at some of these - not sure exactly how far they are from Cork but if they aren't suitable go into www.campingireland.ie & enter a town in the search button - I did West Cork to get those below.

As someone else has said - Ireland isn't particularly MH friendly - the locals are friendly but the councils have height barriers on nearly every location you would want to stop at - obviously to stop the travelling community who could potentially set up camp for months & are difficult to move on. That said there will be loads of motorhomes around. I personally don't find the campsites in Ireland as good as those in the UK so be prepared for a drop in standard.

Hope you enjoy your experience - beautiful country when the sun shines & generally South is much better weather than the North.

Thanks Dotplus6, I did find that website and sent an enquiry to 2 of the campsites but no reply from either. Bit of a shame really as that is our first contact with the Irish camping industry.

Was looking for personal recommendations as per the Blarney replies above, think these tend to be more accurate than a self advertised listing. May not be travelling anyway now as a problem with the motorhome which may or may not get sorted out before ferry date arrives, hey ho.
