Cooking In and Around Your Motorhome

We’ve got the Cadac Safari chef 2 Jim and have used it occasionally but recently my wife has bought one of those portable gas doodahs like you recommended and loves it, infact she’s bought another as a back up.

She’s just purchased an airfryer though after seeing our friends so looking forward to eating some tasty food in the moho.

thanks for the reviews

Yes we do both.
A lot of us do

BUT what with ??? there are a lot of people who swear by certain bits of kit and decry others as useless
I find it is what YOU make of them

We use
A Mr D's (Hay box cooker)
A 14 in 1 multicooker (when on site)
We have just got hold of a small (3L) Pressure/slow cooker to see what we can do with it

We have a Cadac Global ( that's the oldest one in the range)
and a small Charcoal BBQ which we swap between depending where we are going (a lot of Spain had BBQ bans this year but gas grill was OK)

And as for cooking you name it we do it even Bread and cakes in the oven

Unless it is coming down sideways, at 90mph, I always cook outside.

I use a Kampa Colonel field kitchen with a double Broken Link Removedand a Weber Q1000 which the oven tray and rack adapter. All on a y-shaped gas hose that connects to the gas outlet on the moho.

Have to say though, although only my gear is only a couple of years old, those prices seem more than double what I paid for them.

Keep your fingers crossed for me please on 25th December😉. I’m doing a 3 course meal for 5 - not an issue I hear you say but I’m doing it in my PVC and we will be eating in the Quest.!
Not Turkey this year but a nice beef roast. The slow cooker will do the beef overnight, the Ramoska will do the roast potatoes and warm the Yorkshire puds and the other veg will be prepared before we go and heated in the microwave. The starter will be cold, salmon mousse, and smoked salmon etc. Dessert easy - individual Xmas puds heated in the microwave along with rum sauce.
Wish me luck!!😁

Airfryer..brilliant, and used almost daily, Cob, another versatile piece of kit that’s for summer outside cooking, and a cadac carry chef deluxe, that very rarely gets any use at all now days..actually, got two of the cadacs and did have three at one point..don’t ask.😆

I bought a Remoska earlier this year but I use it in the house more than the van because as Jim says in the article, the lid is a PITA! However, it's a super versatile bit of kit which makes a big difference to the options when away. I'll be using it tonight, in fact, and testing out to see how much power from my power bank that it uses. That may change how often I carry it. If I had a slightly bigger van I'd have no qualms about carrying it regularly. As it is, I currently only carry it on specific trips.

I cook inside my van 99% of the time, as I'm usually off grid and discreet camping. The two burner gas hob serves most of my needs pretty well. I have a grill which I've used half a dozen times in 8 years of owning this van.

As well as considering stoves/cookers etc, it's worth mentioning utensils. I have a fabulous very sharp serrated 5" utility knife (Henkels) in the van which is excellent for preparing almost anything. I also have a small sharp paring knife, and another Henkels knife, this time a 'sandwich knife' which is good for what it says. Good knives are not cheap, but they're worth the money and last indefinitely. All knives are kept well secured and out of sight.

We have a gas oven & 2 burner gas hob in the motorhome, but if weather is good we cook outside. We have 2 Gas camping stoves or if on hook-up (or our big generator) we have an electric grill or a george formby grill. Sometimes we BBQ on a folding charcoal BBQ. (Prefer to cook outside to keep smells & steam out of motorhome.)

We recently bought a portable induction hob after reading a thread on here. We also saw people using them in France and cooking outside at the table. Absolutely brilliant when on sites - fast boil of kettle, easy to control and for us, ideal because our gas hob is elderly and a bit weak.

Thankyou for mentioning knives, I would not be without a set of very sharp ones. I used to swear by Global but the last time I was in Sweden, I picked up a set of Sushi serving knives......they are fantastic.

I also use a heavy griddle plate (which can be used for most thing from stir-frys to poached egg) and microwave.
(there's also a Ramoska somewhere?

What air fryer u got Steve?
Daughter has one now and says it’s good but there are so many to choose from🤔🤔

Have a Weber Q1000 that’s a snugg fit in the redundant gas locker, brilliant bit of kit and it can also be used as an oven
Also have a small Remoska, also a 3 burner gas ring that I set up outside when we are cooking for any family that invites themselves over when we go to the local beach😁😁

Must say we have used the Dometic cooker a bit more now as it gets up to 190 after a while so hot enough to cook so long as you don’t open the door.

Remoska or Skillet on the gas hob or even microwave in the van, Remoska in the home kitchen also or the new flatbed microwave combi. Air fryer as well.

If the weather is good, then a lot of cooking is done outside on the Cadac 2 Cook 2 Pro with a griddle plate on one burner cooking the meat feast and a saucepan on the other burner cooking mushrooms in butter.
We use the oven a fair bit and since I added more lagging around the oven, it's now nearly on a par with heat and cooking time of the over in the house.
The other item that gets some use is the Ridge Monkey for toasted sandwiches and cooking fat splattery thing when it's too wet to cook outside.
Our van came with a microwave, but as we are off grid for the most part and it was only getting used as a breadbin, I took it out and turned the space into a cupboard.

We have the small Weber q1000 and the Aldi small air fryer - perfect for 2
We seldom use the oven or hobs
