Hello,
We have just joined. We have a 7 year old Flash 02, which we love. We are complete Francophiles and spend every summer in France. As we're getting on a bit the long distances are beginning to take their toll so does anyone know if the Ford Transit base can be converted to an automatic? It would make such a difference if it could be done.

Many welcomes

I think you can convert the clutch to auto
Only using the gear lever to select gears

No practical experience of such a conversion, not even sure an auto was ever available for that generation granny to be honest. Autoclutch could be a solution though.

Not just a case of swapping gearboxs.
You have things like the gear selector lever and housing plus link cables to change.
then there's brake pedal etc inhibitor switches to wire and fit.
Maybe (almost certainly) different driveshafts and possibly hubs.
Possibly gearbox to engine adaptor plates to buy or fabricate.
The (expensive) list goes on and on.

As I remember a friend had a similar system fitted to a 3ltr car for ease when towing a caravan because or a bad left leg it cost about £1500.
but was not up to the job of towing which would put it in a similar weight as a car & caravan so not much use. Removed after about four months.
This system was for the use of disabled on cars.

Probably best to sell, and look for a MH of similar age and value with autobox from new as a manufacturer's option.

Include those with Renault and Mercedes base chassis in the search.

Hi, its a huge amount of work involved, many items needing to be changed as listed above, depending on the age you may also need to change the wiring loom in the cab + the ECU, again dependent upon age this may all be coded, which means additional expense and work, probabley better as been suggested swap it for an auto or opt for the newer Fiat Comfortmatic Robotised gearbox on your next purchase.

Sorry, just realised you at be thinking of robotised automatic and not full torque converter auto.

My old 2004 Ducato's driving experience was immeasurably improved by the cruise control fitted by @dave newell lvs
I would try that first as being a cost effective option - then consider changing MH if necessary.
I can't see trying to convert to auto being an economic solution.

Yes agreed, cruise control is very good when covering long distances, it makes motorway driving a little less stressful. Just a little note hear though! the 5 speed gearboxes fitted to the x244 varients are not the strongest of gearboxes with a well known 5th gear problem, if travelling on hilly terrain, best to leave the cruise off as it can labour the gearbox in 5th helping to lead to the early demise of the gearbox.

7 years campers before that
definitely not a viable job unless you had the same model van with auto as a donor even then it would be a dificult job if they even made such a van

We had a Chuasson Flash S2 (Fiat Ducato base) we were very fond of and would like to have converted it to automatic. It already had cruise control as an optional upgrade when we bought it new. But it just wasn't practical or indeed possible - notwithstanding there was a semi-automatic version of the Ducato available. In the case of the transit base, I'm fairly certain that was never even an option on the Chausson 02 (which was a van we considered).

We thought about getting the automatic clutch fitted, but in the end changed the van for one with a comfortmatic gearbox. And wow, what a difference it makes! :)

It's the French passion for roundabouts. They seem to like one every few 100m for some insane reason. Why not try Spain for a change. Can recommend the Fiat automatic its great for French roundabouts.
