We have our motorhome insured through Safeguard and also have continental breakdown through them.

However, we will be taking our car to France for a few days next week and found that the Red Pennant (green Flag) with whom we have breakdown cover, don't extend to Europe.

I phoned the Caravan Club to get a quote for continental breakdown cover and they wanted all details of the vehicle - height, roofbox, all passengers who might be coming with us with names and dates of birth and declaration of medical problems, if any.
Price? £240. This is for breakdown, not personal insurance.

Called Safeguard. They asked what car and nothing else.
Price? £101 reduced to £78 for the first year, cancellation whenever I want and no cancellation fee!

Guess who I went with?

I am an Adac member... Never had to use them... And i had read the odd negative thing about them. We recently had an engine management light cone on and reduced power.. Called them.. Spoke with an excellent English speaking German guy who was very efficient and had the AA out within an hour. No problems at all as I expected. (the problem turned out to be the throttle body issue that was resolved under warranty). I see no reason why I wouldn't have received the same efficient germanic service anywhere the policy covers.

Safeguard are great. Rescued us twice this year once in the middle of nowhere in the Highlands and another time in the Peak District - came within 45 mins both times. Excellent service.

I am afraid I have to slate Safeguard. We broke down in a Champagne Chateau within the walled grounds alongside the private part of the river seine in August this year at closing time for the chateau. The owners were happy for us to stay overnight in their unbelievably nice grounds including an 800 yars driveway. Safeguard made arrangments for the gates to be unlocked to let themselves in and locked when they took us out. They arrived in about an hour and we were taken to garage where we slept overnight before getting mended in the morning. They arrived within the hour and language was not a concern. If they were even the slightest bit disorganised we would have had a very pleasant nights stay all by ourselves with our own bit of the seine. On this basis I find it hard to reccommend them

I have got Green Flag with European cover on my car.About £120 I think.

I had to use it last year when the clutch went on my old car while in France.

They were absolutely first class. They towed away within an hour of my call and next day I was picking up a hire car arranged through them.
