I’m taking a couple of valuable instruments to Spain next week on our tour and I notice Comfort doesn’t cover theft without damage or loss to the van and even then it’s £400 max per item.
I’ll need a separate contents insurance as my instruments are worth £3,500
Any suggestions?

As above home insurance or a separate musical instruments cover. I would read the full conditions I would not be surprised if unattended theft from a vehicle was excluded.
Of course like any insurance the premiums collected must be worth a lot more than the claims or the company would be bust personally I would just risk it or if leaving them in the van a lot buy something cheaper for traveling I bought a secondhand cheap guitar so as not to risk an expensive one as it's on loan from my MIL.
Of course if you go down the home insurance route and do claim it could well affect your future premiums and there might be an excess.

We use John Lewis Specialist Home Insurance (sometimes described as their High Value Home Insurance), which has particularly good cover for expensive items when away from home. Do not confuse it with John Lewis Home Insurance which whilst good has more typical levels of cover.

Caravan Guard offer a separate "Gadget and Leisure Equipment Insurance". It can cover phones, cameras, tablets, bikes etc - It also includes 3rd party cover, and there don't appear to be many exclusions. The premium for £1000 worth of cover is £83.

Having seen the cost of gadget insurance mentioned above I think my John Lewis Specialist Insurance looks good value. We chose it because the value of our bikes was over the maximum limit of other home insurers and the cost of 2 bike policies plus our existing home insurance was even more. Also their restrictions were much easier to meet.

I haven't used these people myself but they do offer cover for instruments left unattended in a vehicle, even overnight. There is an extra charge for worldwide cover however. They may be worth getting a quote from.

Let us know how you get on as I may need to take out similar insurance later this year.

I used New Moon in the end who charged £116 for a year for two instruments so not bad at all. Thanks.
