Hi, we have just got a 1995 Compass Calypso motorhome and want to have a cycle rack fitted.

We are struggling to get a recommendation for which sort to buy

and

even worse, no one can advise us if they are easy to fit yourself or if they need specialist fitting

and

if so, is there anyone who can do it in the west midlands / worcestershire area

thanks

Hi Alan

If you can get hold of a copy of this months MMM there is an article by John Wickersham about fitting bike racks and not what to do also some good tips on what to do, especially regarding the use of load spreader plates and tubing to prevent compressing the bodywork when tightening holding bolts, it's worth a perusal if you are considering doing the work yourself.

Regards John.

If you can put a shelf up you can fit a cycle rack
there pretty much all the same
Fiama has the biggest section I think, and are very simple to fit
Try and work out the best possible places for the bolts to come through
usually inside a cupboard at the top and behind furniture or cushion at the lower points,
If thats not possible don't worry the Fiama kits come with spreader plates and a neat white plastic box to cover the plates and bolts inside, you may still use the covers even if the fixings are hidden
once you have decided where its going to mount, select the rack from Fiama,s list and check specifications to find one that will suite, or as close to your desired mounting points (there may be a little compromise reqd) they are adjustable to varying heights so as to accommodate different mounting points.
then all you have to do is make sure the rack will carry the number of bikes you need.
be sure to apply sealant to any outside fittings and test your mounting area with a firm push, there should be very little flexing or movement
Have fun :thumb:

Be very careful about who you choose to do the work, there are plenty of cowboys out there.

In my own case I had a bike rack fitted but the dealer I bought the van off and inside 12 months the wight of 2 bikes pulled the backing plates clean through the vans back panel.

After that plus 2 or 3 more cowboy episodes I now do all the work my self.

Don't be reassured by the price or size of the dealership/workshop get a word of mouth recommendation.

Alan, I have a Compass Calypso and it has a bike rack already fitted.

I'll take some photos and see if it has a 'name', and will post tomorrow - if I can. I have a full day tomorrow, and then I'm travelling up to Huddersfield overnight (from London) for a night's work - then home late Sunday.

Regards,

Dave

0 - but I live in hope
Considering I dont even own a MH I probably shouldn't be getting involved in this but I will

Could you not fit a tow bar and use a normal car rack ? I have three bikes on mine and it wouldn't need to connect to the fibreglass at all
