I’ve just had a row with Plusnet about my mobile so I’m leaving them. EE in my area isn’t brilliant , neither is O2, so I want to use Vodafone network. According to Martins Money Saving LEBARA 5Gb sim only is a good deal. Any comments on their service? It will be for phone rather than data specific.
Just out of interest I was with Vodafone for years, when they were a minor subsidiary of Racal. Left when they started charging for customer support.

Since 2005! 2000+ nights so far...
Look via Moneysaving Expert or uSwitch - they tend to have very good starter deals.
We have one - works as well as you'd want, roams fine, and was perfect with roaming data (FoC) in India.

At their pricesI I’m not worried to much about a pound here or there. I’m from a generation where my first hand portable was £2000 +, and monthly phone bills were well over £100. Mind you, they did give me a new phone of my choice every 6 months, my kids were the envy of all their friends.

I’m happy with Lebara.
Been with the over a year as a replacement for a company provided & paid for sim.
Had a 5GB deal. Now on a 15GB deal. Both from uswitch.
UK calls and txt are unlimited. Abroad there’s 100min of calls.

Ooops. Forgot costs: 15GB deal is £6.95 per month. Monthly contract.

Nick has Lebara, no problems, Switzerland isn’t covered when roaming. Not a problem except if you’re both on it!
There is a funny little glitch some of us have found when arriving in new countries, you often have to reset the APN settings but other than that it’s fine. Did drive a friend a bit potty last year on a Med cruise when she had to rest it almost every day as they were waking in a new country almost every morning.

Another question please. When retaining your number, is there any period during transfer when your number is unavailable?

Yes for an hour or two as your number is ported over using a PAC code

Is there any limitation in using tethering from the phone with the sim in?

Often it’s pretty instant, but you need a time when you’re not totally dependent on access. Lebara are great for me. 15GB data £6.49 via Martin Lewis deal. Works in France and Spain with no cap.

I believe that technically it’s a slightly slower speed when tethered - but I’ve not had a problem. Lebara (and others) do have use limits (my 15GB isn’t limited lower when roaming). Use via tether is no different from direct use in my experience

Should it be post #13 you quoted?
The way I read the posts, Gus was describing his experience of phone number changes.

My main phone is still subject to a contract with 3. If I purchase a Lebara sim for use in the EU and port my existing number over, will I have any problem with transferring it back again?

Alternatively, if I put the Lebara sim in a spare phone and again move the number over would I have a problem re-establishing the number in the existing main phone?

Until the contract is finished I don't thjink you can port the number

i don't really get what you are saying here ? if the lebara sim is in a spare phone it would be using the number allocated to it?

If you request a PAC code from 3 early to transfer your number they will count that as terminating your contract early and will charge you for the rest of your contract I would think.

Thanks Carolyn that was my concern. It looks that if I want to retain my number, I'll have to put up with roaming charges.

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
Most phones now can accept 2 sums, or possibly an e sim, can you keep your existing number, but use a 2nd sim when roaming?

My old 3 contract runs out in June, they are the only one that don’t tend to let you run your old contract on so I will be changing then as they no longer include roaming on their new contracts.

As you have an old smartphone why don’t you get a Lebara or Smarty sim anyway for that one and use it whilst you’re away for all you’re roaming stuff but just use your “normal phone” when you have Wi-Fi . I did that when I was in America before Covid. At that time I was on Vodaphone so had that in my normal phone but only used that on Wi-Fi but had a 3 pay as you go in an old phone as well. Worked great for quickly checking stuff out and about.

iPhones aren’t dual sim.

Ordered 2 for 2 phones in separate transactions. They seem very efficient, although porting my original number over wont take place until the 12th, which surprised me a bit. Luckily I have a spare phone, so at the moment Lebara sim is in spare phone, and I'll carry both until I know the number is ported

For many years while in France I had a duel sim Android phone with a Tesco PAYG Sim for receiving UK calls, I kept about £5 on it and sent a text every couple of months. I then had a French Sim for data and calls out to UK & Europe. It worked very well for many years. Now back in the UK and jumping through the roaming hoops.
