Hi,

We've just come back from a weekend in Yorkshire where I got 3.5 hours sleep on the first night, and 4.25 on the second, so we're looking to replace the mattress on our Adria Twin with something more comfortable. I'm just 5' 3" and normal BMI, so I tend to find most firm mattresses are rock hard. I think I need something other people would call soft to get a medium-soft for myself. HWMBO tells me he's a giant of a man, but this must be in some other reality where men top out at 5' 6", so he's happy with the softer choice too.

Any recommendations? It's on a raising bed, so I think wants to be on the lighter side itself - not pocket sprung, then. Would need to be custom as the corner is cut off.

Cost is no object really, as getting a good night's sleep is so important.

We previously bought an Ikea foam mattress. Unzipped the cover. Cut the corners off and shortened it a bit with a bread knife. Then put it back in the cover and slept on it for 6 months while we toured Europe. We could have re-sewn the cover, but we just tucked it. It was way more comfortable than our very expensive mattress at home.

We’ve found that motorhome mattresses are often quite firm.
On our latest van it has a water gel mattress which is extremely comfortable

I had a very quick look online and these guys may sell them

Might be worth checking out Duvalay, either for a topper or a new mattress. We are currently using their toppers on the seat / bed in our PVC and it has made a big difference to the comfort

We did exactly the same :-)

Devon Sue & cranky - thanks for the vote of confidence in Duvalay, who are on my list. Are you on the lighter side too? My concern was that they said their mattresses were medium firm, so might be too firm for me.

Guigsy & spitfire - similar question to above - the only Ikea option I could see said it was a firm or medium firm (can't remember) mattress.

Zingano haha, I'm definitely not but my OH is and he likes the duvalay toppers. We have just paid a deposit on an Adria compact with an island bed so I am hoping that I can adapt the toppers to suit, as there seems to be a general consensus that Adria mattresses are on the firm side.

We got a medium firm. I've got a normal BMI and I'm slightly shorter than the average male. I don't think I'd want to go much softer as the mattress is only 12cm thick and you'd feel the slats. It's a lot softer than car seat foam.

We went to Ikea and tried them all but chose a firm one . But worth visiting if you have one near . Much cheaper if there is one that suits

It looks as though Custom Size Beds do a gel memory foam mattress, has anyone got one? I think they were recommended on other threads on here too.

We've always found mattresses in our vans too firm and have improved the comfort significantly by putting inexpensive memory foam toppers cut to size on top.

mikebeaches - yes, we bought the thickest topper I could find in Dunelm en-route for our second night ever in the van, but it's not doing the trick. Maybe I could just switch it for a better one though.

Yes, sometimes it's a matter of trial and error finding the right level of comfort.

As you mentioned originally, you can't put a price on a good night's sleep... in our case, especially when you reach a certain age.

We bought a custom shaped memory foam topper in mid May for our dropdown bed from Bodymould Mattresses, Rusper near Horsham, West Sussex. Made and delivered in just under 10 days [we were away in the m/home, otherwise we could have had delivery a couple of days earlier]. Made a huge difference to the comfort, but at 9kg for the 5cm version, it should do!

marchie - many thanks for that! Bodymould do a gel foam mattress called the Airflow which is cooler (great!) and soft to medium firmness. I’ll call them today and get a price.

We also have the duvalay mattress topper, also bought hubby the sleeping bag option, for when using the side pull out bench, when grandkids come along.

I’d definitely go for a good quality mattress topper.
You will not believe the difference it makes.
8/10 hours sleep (guaranteed)(y):X3::pinocchio:

could try Jonic (google them) for a topper works well in our Rapido.

But recent purchase by friend for their caravan from Duvaly might be a tad thicker???!!!

When we had our first PVC the bed was made up from several cushions leaving gaps between them. We bought a cheep mattress topper. This made the bed comfortable.
We have a coach build now that uses the rear bench seats for the bed. Again we use the same mattress topper.

We had the same problem of beds too firm. We tried good quality memory foam toppers and had some effect but have just bought a 7 inch thick 'deluxe memory foam mattress from bodymould and the difference is fantastic. They are classed as firm I think but they are certainly not as firm as we had.
