Hey Forum, I am researching options for how to hide away a dining table. I have researched this a lot but nobody online seems to have done what I am looking to do yet .

One option is a single telescopic leg which would half work as would not allow the table to vanish away completely into the floor so would be my last option if I cannot find a better way. The other option is no table which I am considering.

The table needs to raise and lower to 2 positions. The highest position will be table for working or dining. The lowest position should be table top completely flush with the floor.

I will have a galley sofa layout which converts into a bed and want to be able to stand up straight without crouching so lowest position needs to be floor level with table top.

I can raise the floor level to max 100mm to accommodate the mechanism and table top see below drawing of the plan.

Any suggestions on how one might approach this? I am thinking of an ironing board type mechanism that allows the table to be raised simply by pulling it upwards until it locks into place.

You may well tell me that I will have better luck finding a unicorn that pisses whisky but worth an ask :)

I can't help with your query but we've been thinking of trying to construct a fold out additional worktop, love the idea of an ironing board mechanism - thank you!

I tnink for what you want you will be looking at a custom made mechanism, maybe something operating on a scissor action. Something like a workshop table for lifting things to height.

To be perfectly honest the last thing I would want is having to standing on my table top which is what you'll be doing when it's in the floor.

I'd have a swing table using the type of leg shown above and a pull out section from one of the sofas to form the bed base, much easier to do too.

What's the layout of the camper going to be?

I don’t know if this will be if use?

We have a similar layout and we use one of these. They are so easy to set up and put away.

Ahh this won't work in this setting but thanks for the suggestion, this does indeed solve another of my problems up at the front of the van. The swivel chair could do with one of these for a laptop or food...

I'll put a rug over the top of it ;)

i think i saw something similar on one of the george clarkes small spaces series. i think it was his friends converted storage container, where everything folded down into the floor.

there was also one idea in one programme where everything was cnc cut and was stored as part of the walling system

You've got me thinking now ... what about one that drops down from above?

If you have 4" to use why not use a single leg option stored in or modified to fold into the recess? The table top could be lifted and placed onto the mount by hand. Any other method (lowering from ceiling, scissor lift, etc.) involves too many joints /pivots that will result in an irritatingly wobbly table.

I've thought about that. It is an option but I can't figure out a way to make it sturdy. Also you would have either 4 lines (1 in each corner) to suspend it or one single rod in the middle. Ideally would want the top side of the table unobscured

I wasn't clear, I meant as in fold down from the rear. Looking at your plan I assume you will be having 2 longitudinal singles as they appear to be long enough for that, if so a drop down or fold out table from the rear might work, or a pull out one, some ideas below:

Some excellent suggestions there... really appreciate that, thanks! I may actually use some of these ideas. Unfortunately the space I have doesn't allow for these. I think I may have answered my own question in the OP though. I had a look at the ironing board last night and the mechanism is ideal. It auto clicks into position to allow ironing while sitting down. I will need to modify it a bit so that the legs will run on tracks to give it stability and make it easier to open / close however (no biggie).

The other option for having a table that raises out of the floor is beauty bed legs. they are totally solid and fold away into the bed. There are 4 of them (one in each corner. My partner has a beauty bed which I'll take a look at tonight to assess suitability.

One thing to think of ref the beauty bed legs in each corner, you won't be able to shuffle down the side of the table in/out of the seats, you need the legs to be along the centre front and back, that's what most MH/caravan tables are like, a quick search came up with loads of images which may give you ideas:

We have a collapsible table. The top and leg clip to the van wall. There is a hole in the floor on the inside and a tripod leg for outside use.

Could use simple hinge down legs, short and long. Or telescopic hinge down legs?
