Hi, here is my 2001 neoplan starliner converted into a motorhome, it took 7 months with 2 of us working on it 2/3 days a week. 4 fixed berths, will sleep 8 in comfort and travel 8.
Full led lighting, 3kw solar panels, 5kw inverter charger. Combi style boiler for hot water. Diesel fired Webasto water heating for radiators.
I recently added a spec lift for a tow car. I don’t like A frames and trailers are no good when your at a site, so this was the best solution for me.
It has full air suspension, a 15.2 litre twin turbo Mercedes v8 pushing 480hp. As for mpg, it’s does more than the Rv’s that I’ve own in the past.

Mick, I'm curious, is the car lift legal? I thought that sort of thing was only for recovery purposes.

Unless the law has changed the tow car is classed as a trailer so has to comply with with lighting regs ie must have a light board and must be under 750kgs as its unbraked

Wow! Nice conversion, bet it drives nicely as well, what gearbox did they use for it. I remember being in a n older manual neoplan pusher with my brother and it was real challenge to change gear until it warmed up Afaik it was a cable change.

Fantastic conversion, well done. Ironically I saw a similar conversion on a red neoplan starliner that had broken down on the local lorry / bus park a couple of weeks ago.

I'm not talking about the car itself but the lift mechanism which appears to be similar to that used by recovery vehicles and AFAIK is not permitted for private individuals to use for towing their own vehicles.

Don't know what AFAIK and I meant once the car is attached to the spec lift it is classed as an unbraked trailer the same as a trailer attached to the towing via a towbar so it must have lights that are worked from the towing vehicle and carry the same registration plate as the towing vehicle and when its put on a weigh bridge the weight of the car must be 750kgs or less

It is a nice looking convertion just too big for me I prefer small and not having to worry about where I'm going in terms if narrow lanes or low bridges but the I only normally go away for 2 or 3 days at a time so don't need buckets of space or lots of extra luxuries that you will have on a big vehicle

It looks like you've done a great job and I like the bodywork colour. The cat seems to have settled in well.
I am curious about the overhead lockers. They look like airline "bins" and I'm wondering if you have had to adapt them to keep smaller items secure when travelling, such as food tins, packets, crockery, etc.

The law was you could tow a broken down vehicle to the nearest safe place or nearest place for repair, on an A frame without the towed vehicle being braked. It is only if you chose to tow a vehicle that isn't broken down ( Ie you are doing it for your own convenience, not out of necessity,) that the vehicle on the A frame has to be braked in unison with the towing vehicle. Presumably the same rule applies to Spectacle lift, ie if the casuality is genuinely broken down, then you can tow it unbraked, but if you chose to deliver a new car , (for example) that could be driven, then you would be breaking the law if it were not braked.

It's the use of the spectacle lift itself, nothing to do with brakes, lights etc. These types of lifts are AFAIK (as far as I know) only permitted for use for the recovery of vehicles and not for towing a drivable car for leisure etc.
