I have a Blaupunkt 530 unit in the MH that provides the SatNag. The map data etc. is held on a 8gb data card that I update as required. I have another 8gb card and I would like to produce an exact copy of the original. I have copied the good card to the second card and all appears well but try as I might the copy simply does not work when I plug it into the unit. What am I doing wrong?

Sat-nav cards are copy protected. As I understand it, lose the original and a replacement will be very expensive

With some SatNavs and similar devices the data cards are formatted in a certain way. They often need to be formatted using the device. Sometimes there are hidden system files that the device uses to access the card.

Simply copying and pasting the map data using a computer is only half the job.

You could try formatting the new card using the SatNav so the device can see it and then copying the data from the old card on to it.

If that doesn't work you may have to clone the original card or take a disk image of it and apply that to the new card.

All SD cards have a unique serial number digitally built in to them. I would suspect this is the issue. Even if you have copied the content correctly (and there are no hidden directories) the serial number of your new card won't match.

the map data is copyright, it will be protected to prevent copying or cloning by third parties wishing to avoid the licence cost ..

when I bought my Octavia, the sat nav map data card was locked in the dealers office, he said they had problems with them being taken from cars on the forecourt .

If you ever lose or damage the card you can probably only get a replacement from the dealer.. so can understand your quest, but fear it's futile.

I understand your wanting to have a back-up but I doubt you'l be able to do it for the reasons mentioned above, they are copyright protected/encoded in some way otherwise there would be pirate copies being sold on Ebay.

I have the map data backed up on my computer. The back-up is created by the Naviextra software as the first step of an update. Reloading a back-up to the original card is quick and easy and works. Loading it to another card does not work so there is something on the original card that is not there on the spare I'm trying to create. I really would like a spare as the last time I inserted the card it flipped and did a runner down a tiny gap between the floor and drivers seat. It took hours to find out where it was hiding and hours trying to extract it .

This link describes a way of reading the SD card serial number. https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-view-an-sd-card-id

However, I don't know if you can write this to another card. Might be worth trying. :)

I screwed up the card on mine, unit was only a month old had to pay £150 for a new card, good job I bought the unit from Germany and German dealer supplied the replacement card a lot cheaper than getting it from the UK.

May one suggest you fill the offending gaps with something so if it get's 'athletic' again it can't hide? One reason I HATE built in sat-nav systems is the stupid cards that cost a fortune to replace if they get damaged/corrupt/lost etc, the card for our new Smart car goes into a slot between the seats and it is very easy to knock it when putting in/out the seat belt.
