What do you all do for cleaning your bikes when you're away on the road, eg do you use a bike stand? Do you use hot water?

Just water and a cloth, sometimes a hose if required, but avoid chemicals as that would remove the lubricants that are protecting certain bits.

Thanks everyone, pleased to hear you keep it simple and I'll follow suit. I will take some brushes. I don't know what to do about a bucket as space is limited, maybe a child's one.

A few years ago we were at camp site at Javea . There was a guy with a road bike placed standing on the sink drainers of the washing up area , giving his bike a full wash and brush up :X3:

Thanks I'll get one of those collapsible buckets. Glad you're not all taking specialist gear.

Leave it dirty,just lubricate.
The rain will wash it off soon enough.

A wipe with a damp Microfibre towel, if really muddy hose them Dow with the shower (I have a shower in the garage).

I would personally never use either car shampoo or washing up liquid, as they both contain salt and that's really bad for any exposed metal, it causes corrosion

A pump up garden spray. Also great for cleaning the van wheels, solar panels, flies off the bonnet and windscreen, dogs who have rolled in something, etc etc and doesn't use much water. Broken Link Removed

External shower point on our van is very useful for de-muddying the dog,the wellies, pity they put it near the hab door.

After I started this thread, and after I'd watched some 'clean your bike in 5 mins' vids I spenty a good 3 hours cleaning my bike degreasing the drivetrain and relubing it and it's still dirty, so I'm kind of coming round to your PoV!

Good point and I've wondered about this as some quite enthusiastic bikers on youtube say they use washing up liquid and I wondered why they chanced that when they could just use eg car shampoo.

Wash the bikes? When away?
Yes, I know it's outrageous but I have in mind mud, and in super dry and sunny climes, which I can imagine, even if I can't rember them, even tons of dust! In a separate thread, I'll ask how I can keep my roof clean when away whilstr avoiding having to use a ladder.

I carry a telescopic ladder useful to keep the solar panels clean.

Simplist way is not bother, it's only going to get mucky again.
Do you wash your car when you get to the supermarket and again when you get home?

Car doesn't have solar panels, you lose a few amps when they are covered in sand.

It's not really an option not to clean them. When we bought the bikes from AS bikes we had the option of some complementary items and one of these was a bag. I don't see the point of a bag, but OH says they will keep the bikes clean. If I put the bike away dirty I'll get blamed not only for a dirty bike but also for dirtying the bag.

The town local to us in Central Portugal, has a public bike wash adjoining the loos.
We hope to get to Portugal in the not too distant future, I must found out what the green cycle routes are like.

Burgo thanks for the garden spray suggesstion I like that, the easier I can clean the bikes the better.
