Thanks.
Just phoned the guy.
Recon diesel pump and clutch sorted.
Had an engine refurb just over 2 years ago, now out of warranty. He said it runs, but slowly, maybe a piston prob? Also sounds rattly, like a bit of tin, from the top of the engine?
Have to ask about for worse case scenario, cost for a replacement 2330 1982 merc engine.
Also getting it done in uk as I wouldn't fancy driving it back to alicante!

Hymer worth a bit more than that surely, even if a new engine is required.
Worth a look and well spotted.

660cc engine it will be far too powerful for a little girl.:ROFLMAO:
:D
Would make a good toad for pulling behind a big MH so you still have some facilities when you go out for the day!

Yes, be a great place to put my phone, wallet and sunglasses. Not sure where I'd put myself once I've filled it with those items though ;)

That Hymer is a "symphony in brown" isn't it? Still, if someone wanted a project, could be a good one - wouldn't take that much to brighten up the interior - although I can't help but think that it could easily turn into a money pit and/or be difficult to get the right parts for to sort the engine issues. Unless the base vehicle carried on well past 1982 I can't see there being many of them left to keep the spares market alive.

As for the American thing - more "spares" than "repairs" I suspect!

The Mercedes engine fitted to this Hymer was known the million mile engine.

' The OM617 engine family is a straight-5 diesel automobile engine from Mercedes-Benz used in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a direct development from the straight-4 OM616. It was sold in vehicles from 1974 to 1991. The OM617 is considered to be one of the most reliable engines ever produced with engines often reaching over 1,000,000 km (620,000 mi) without being rebuilt and is one of the key reasons for Mercedes' popularity in North America in the 1980s, as it was powerful and reliable compared to other automotive diesels of the time. It is also a very popular choice for the use of alternative fuels, mainly straight or waste vegetable oil and biodiesel, although the use of these fuels may cause engine damage over time if not processed properly before use.'

My boat had an OM636 engine, 4-cylinder, probably derived from the 616(I think the workshop manual covered both). Mine was built under licence in Zaragossa, Spain in about 1977. I believe it was fitted to the Mercedes 180.

Very reliable engine and simple to service and work on. I even replaced the head gasket myself on the quayside in Greece and at 30 years it did not need skimming.

It has now gone with the boat to my friend who is a very experienced engineer - RAF, motorsport and his own boat repair business in Palma, so it is in good hands for another few years.
