I have a Hymer Exsis and I am aware that 3500kg is the point at which vehicle classifications change.

On my identification plate I see the numbers as follows

3500kg
5500kg
1750kg - 1
2000kg-2

I am assuming the (1) and (2) refer to front and rear axle. But, am I considered to be within the 3500 kg limit or above it?

I know there are a few Exsis designs and mine is certainly one of the shorter ones.

3500 kg is your limit, the axle weights are individual limits but together they cannot exceed the 3500.
the 5500 is the Gross Train Weight which is the limit if towing a trailer or toad. (y)

The vehicle is rated /plated at 3500kg..
If you are inside that weight you wont know unless you go on a weighbridge..

I must not be asking the right question. I understand that when I get to age 70 (18 months time) my driving license has to be renewed. Do I need the simple car license or the special one for heavier vehicles?

you will keep the b and b+e categories so . b+e allows a upto 3,500kg vehicle towing anyweight trailer as long as the towing vehicles train weight isnt exceeded .
well if you were driving before 19-1-2013 . after then the trailer is restricted to 3,500kg.
