We nearly always go abroad and never book anywhere. It's what we do and the way we like it. Looking at sites for the UK this year (CAMC although any would do) and finding same as last year that availability is very little and impossible at weekends.

Has anyone had any success? are CLs easier? or other sites. Or is it practical to not book up ahead?

We hate to book but travelling from the North East to say Dorset sounds scary if there ends up being nowhere to stop and its a long way back home.

we usually mostly book in the uk and not abroad, the popular seaside, pub next door sites seem to book up quick nd the nice peaceful out in the country or a bit too far from places of interest seem to be slower to fill up. with the number of new vans on the road it might be even busier than last year. could possibly book the dorset one and use camping pubs for the journey, but I would also book those. have a good time whatever you chose.

Apart from Fun I am only with the camping and caravanning club. Find their rallies and THS (temp holiday sites) suit my style of UK camping 👍 So as long as you don't want/need EHU and toilet blocks give them a try.

We don't need either hook up our facilities but like to go on proper sites occasionally.
Unfortunately we find the uk is more geared up for caravans than motorhomes. We don't expect to find town centre stellplatz here but not having a car, don't want to be too far from everywhere. We cycle but only so far, on the flat and not main roads.

What about using rallies at the weekend?
That's a thought. Need some looking into. We're only with the CAMC and I've already checked out Fun's rallies but no matching dates.

I haven’t had much problem booking with either club - this week I even managed to book May bank holiday at Cheltenham Racecourse.
You'd think in our 70s we'd not be going July/August but it's the weather you know.

If you're on fb there's a very good camc CL booking group that you could join.

Lots of CL owners put availability, photos etc & you can post to ask about availability.

And of course our fun cls & there's more coming fingers crossed.

Camc west Dorset centre seems to have some holiday rallies , I cannot cut and paste it won’t work tonight.

We had this exact problem last year as well, gone are the days of just turning up trying it out then extending your trip if you like it, first trip was Cornwall in June, had to come home early because of no pitches at weekends.
We then went away mid Sept to Wales as normally quiter, but still had the same issues and had to come home early as there was no availability over the weekends.
The final straw for us this year again was no availability, prices gone up then having to que for a shower if the facilities are open so we have decided to give up, sell our motorhome (worth a lot more than 2 years ago), wait for the world to settle down, stay keep calm and move on. Two stressfull trips last year does not justify an expensive MH on the drive.
Best wishes and good luck all.

To be fair Cornwall is overcrowded normally in the summer, but I know where you’re coming from. Good luck with the sale.

Thanks, sold to a dealer last month who picked it up within a few days, paid by BACS transfer, done deal no messing. Cam belt due this month so pleased to get rid of the money pit that was getting hard to use.
Not just Cornwall that is busy, Devon & Dorset the same and all out of school holidays.

For the sake of the equivalent of a pound a week, it might be worth joining C&CC for their temporary holiday sites and weekend rallies.
Absolutely agree. We use weekend rallies and temp holiday sites quite a lot. Having said that we've actually booked some CSs for our June holiday.

At the moment we only have a long weekend planned for July but will be looking for some rallies & THSs once our June holiday is over.

We are same.

This is a favourite for us.. Easy walk into town via the river or bike ride. Fairly flat. Also Bus stop outside on main rd.

Ouch. That's what I fear. Worst scenario possible. Hope you didn't have too far to return to home.

Don't understand this - anywhere suitable for a caravan, must be also okay for a motorhome  ?

Britstops is another good resource.
A lot of sites are in the middle of nowhere so without transport you could be stuck on the site. We have a scooter on the back of our van when we go anywhere for longer than a few days so that we can at least get to the shops. We're going away for most of June and can't take enough food for the whole time so having the scooter we can at least get out and about.

Always find that most site’s are close to bus services.

I've always considered Motorhoming to be touring, caravan stay put for a few days
With a bit of research, you can find parking for most vans.
If you want to play being a caravan, and be onsite for a few days...
...you can always hire a car

There are solutions to most challenges, just depends on how flexible you're willing to be.

Weekends, in peak season at a premium location is always going to be difficult.
Even in Europe.

Give some of the smaller CL sites a try, we even had Tesco deliver here recently to one organised party.

We go out and about in our motorhome, every day, when we're away. Last year, a lady in the motorhome opposite commented on us clearing off everyday. She was fascinated about where we went. We explained that we went all over the place. This was in North Norfolk and we know lots of places where you can park. She said her husband would never do that, as he liked to get loads of stuff out. They did indeed have a shed load of stuff, table, chairs, awnings, fairy lights, BBQs and various mysterious containers.

For me, especially with Covid, it's a joy to go out for the day and have your own facilities. Even before Covid, we liked driving off before breakfast, parking overlooking the sea and having coffees and bacon sandwiches.
