Hi,

My lad is selling his car and looking to put his personal registration on retention using the DVLA online facility. Looking at the Gov.uk website, it mentions that the current reg will be removed immediately if it does not require an inspection. His car is taxed, mot and insured so no problem about meeting the criteria on those points but does this automatically mean his car will NOT require an inspection for the transfer to take place? Do they sample applications and inspect vehicles to make sure they really are roadworthy/legal before allowing a transfer to take place?

When will he know when to change over his physical registration plates on the car as he expects to have the original 62 registration back?

We've added cherished plates in the past and it has been instantaneous using the online system. We've not taken one off and a bit wondrous especially with the delays that are happening with DVLA at the moment, although logic dictates that the online system shouldn't be affected...

Thanks for any advice

Nico

you will normally get the original reg back to put on with the new v5.

once you have put it on retention you can remove the cherished plates immediately. if done on line

It’s just the same as putting one on. You will have to pay £80 to get it on a retention document. It will give you the old number of the car to put ref on. And a cert you can print cto get the plates made up. Very easy really.

I did one onto retention and then on to a new car I had bought all done online and the V5's all back in days

The inspection bit normally only applies when very old numbers are being taken off very old cars to stop people buying a chassis and a number plate just so they can remove the number.

Thanks all. I’ll let him know it’s immediate to change his plates if he does the online application. Good to check here though

I did ours last week. I received the retention certificate in a couple of days. I had to change my insurance and number plates straight away.
