Did they leave the roof box unlocked overnight at the roadside somewhere near Calais or did he break the lock to get in ?

Let's see - criminal damage, theft of their belongings, illegal entry, no passport, wasting Police time and smiling in the street south of Birmingham.

That should be enough to get him a few grand from the State and a decent house while he's processed.

Around the time that HMG started to send some UK border force/customs units to check on UK vehicles before boarding, in a effort to ostensibly cut down on the numbers being "smuggled" to the UK. (you can`t trust those Frenchies, you know) Pulls onto the boarding area at Calais and was duly approached by UK officers. "Can we inspect your vehicle sir?" Me, Yes, no problem, two rummagers have a good look in all 8 basement lockers, in the bathroom, wardrobe etc; I even lift the bed to show the "dirty washing". "Thank you sir, Have a good trip home". Outside the "boss lady", says to one of them "have you checked the roof?". "Not yet" says he. ME "Any one was up there is now spread all over the A16. I hit near 70 on the downhill section!!"!. Boss lady, "you`d be surprised how many try!".
