What way do you prefer ? test first , fails & then passes, you still have no idea if what was failed has been repaired?
Test & pass first time = still no idea what is hidden ?
so you always have to assume that something is being hidden & go over it yourself or if you've no idea get someone who does to inspect it.

Being a person who doesn't trust anyone unless I was watching the test at the time then i wouldn't be believing that anything had been done whicever way you tested it,same as vehicle servicing.

You mean you don't approve Geo.... Well I never. :D
You just can't see it can you.
If someone was going to "Bodge" it before the test they are going to "bodge" it after it fails to get a pass.
What's the difference.

I think at that price the van is free and the seller is only looking to recover his parts and labour outlay

Seller's other items
  • Sell one like this
  • For sale is my Hymer B 544 on an F plate so it is an 89 which makes it 29 years old it is based on a Peugeot Talbot express which at the time was also a Citroen C25 a Peugeot J5 in france and a Mk1 Fiat Ducato. All of which weren’t great vans when they were new. This one is an A class as you can see, so no worries about the windscreen rust that kills the coachbuilts. I’ve had it 6 years and it has been great. It is a 5 berth formed from an overcab double and a double and single in the dining area.

There are 4 belted seats for travelling but vans built prior to October 2007 do not need passengers seated in accommodation areas to wear seatbelt- however if sat in a seat with a belt fitted you must wear it.

We bought it cheap as we weren’t sure if campervan holidays were for us, but 6 years on we’ve just bought a shiny new one.

It was a mistake buying it cheap as there was much that was needed doing to it but I have done it all, it is mechanically and functionally perfect. About 5 thousand pounds has been spent on it in the time we’ve had it and it is totally reliable. It starts first time every time, it smokes like a chimney from cold but once warm, this disappears and it burns no oil.

It is the 2.5TD PSA manufactured engine and has power steering and air ride at the rear, most parts are easy and surprisingly cheap to come by there are some parts that are obsolete but if you see the parts that I’ve replaced you’ll realise that I’ve covered almost all of those.

It is left hand drive and column shift. It is strange to drive at first due to this, but after 10 miles you are used to it.

Its okay for its age inside, but shows signs of wear. If you are after a van that is immaculate inside with arrangements of toilet rolls in the bathroom and doilys on the table then this is really not for you.

It has blown air heating via truma e2400 and has a fitted truma fireplace and is really a toasty van, if you have looked at forums you’ll see that hymers are well known for their build quality and it was these vans that first established that reputation if you’re buying an older van whether you buy this or not, get a German one they are just…… better!

As I said it is clean dry and fully functional.

Things I have done- if you go to look at an old hymer you can use this as your checklist of what to check- quite literally

Remanufactured headlight adjusters-these are an obsolete part.

    New headlights-old ones corroded

    New white indicators

Remanufactured and reinforced rear leaf spring suspension chassis mounts-they rust and weaken here.

Remanufactured rear leaf spring support assembly including polyurethane bushes- again obsolete part but there are specialist suppliers that make the metal parts- I got the polyurethane machined by an engineering company, not for sportiness but for longevity and the rubbers were obsolete.

Rear axle stripped and restored –new bearings brake shoes brake, cylinders, brake springs, shock absorbers brake bias adjuster, air ride clamps, handbrake cables

Front drive shafts replaced- if worn the front of the van shudders horribly when under load.

New exhaust, this is obsolete in the UK so individual parts sourced from Europe.

Full top end rebuild including rocker replacement.

    New master cylinder

    New front pads and disks

    new front bearings

all new front tie rod rubbers.

    new ball joints L&R,

    front right track rod end.

New brake lines front to rear including flexi’s

    New engine mounts (all 3)

    New windscreen

    New radiator new hoses.

New Maxxis truckmaxx tyres all round and new spare (duron not Maxxis)

    New truma fire installed

Blue tooth alpine cd player fitted with aux in-mission front speakers, bespoke cabinets in rear housing 6x9’s.

    Leisure system Fuse panels installed.

    Nissan leather front seats fitted

Tv point installed with connection for external aerial

Thetford cassette all seals replaced.- not a nice job find out when yours were last done!!

2x butane bottles 1 full other ¾ full

    External BBQ point

    Isofix mounts in front

    240V hook up cable

    All new curtains throughout

Insulated window blinds original hymer in great condition but no bag..

    Bad bits

Wind out awning does not work, its there but we’ve never used it. But they are pretty much irrelevant in Scotland.

Evidence of a previous leak at the rear headlining, leaks no more but the marks are evident

Table has a small hole/dent in the top

Right hand window blind is a fiddle to put up

General wear on the inside of a 29 year old van.

I am happy to send out any photos of anything a prospective buyer wants, just ask, the van is based in Inverness so it’s a long way to come to look at it only to decide it’ not for you, I can pick people up from the airport if needed.

I’m not budging on the 3.5k asking price so don’t haggle there are some absolute wrecks going for £4.5k and this is a good sound van.

Each to their own, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss MOT history, as it can also be useful for checking recorded mileage
