Please help :(
Finally collected our lovely pre-loved 2014 welcome 718EB this weekend. We can only find 3 electricity sockets... 2 near the roof, presumably for the televisions and one under a cupboard above the sink? Are we missing something or have you all had to have extras installed? Seems like madness not to have any usable points in the main living area etc, where do people plug their phones/tablets etc? Thank you for your kind advice.... it's always welcome! x

We had a Chausson allegro 94 - also very short on sockets. I fitted a couple of extras. The Burstner we have now hasn't got many either, but it has plenty of 12 volt outlets, and most of what we use can be run off 12 volt, which is just as well as we rarely use hook-up!

In our AutoTrail we have 5.
2 are in permanent use for fridge and microwave. In addition there is an added on extension socket in external locker.

We hardly have any 230v ones in our Rapido. 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the bedroom I think.

Doesn't matter though as we rarely have hookup.

There are a few 12V & usb points although not loads.

Don't see it as a problem, we've never not been able to do anything we've wanted to do.

There are not many motorhomes on the market that come with sufficient 230 12v or USB as supplied..and then frequently in strangest places..
My chausson came with two 12v and a 230v sockets in a high level cupboard.. obviously for the telly which was in an equally stupid place as folk in one of the main seats in the living area would have had their back to it..
On the bright side they did run 230 and 12v into the garage so that saved a bit work

Sufficient? Surely that depends how you use your van?

The few that we have are more than sufficient for our needs (y)

More than toes wet now!
6 x 230v but only 3 x 12v (including 2 in dashboard)!
Adding more is on the To Do list.

True nick... but I'll think you'll find a lot of folk think like the op and myself...
I like things to be at hand... not have to get up and go wandering round to plug in devices etc..the more convenient things are the easier it is and the more pleasurable..
That' just the electrics.. I'll not bore you with loads of other minor points that sometimes make me wonder if the blokes who design some mh'' actually use or have tried them..
Andy.

I think this is another British built v Continental built question.

Most of the British builders are caravan builders who assume that the vehicle will be used as a caravan i.e. on a campsite, with electricity and that people will lug a load of appliances around with them. The Europeans have a different history of using camping cars - off site/aire parking with no EHU has always been more the norm so they see no point in fitting loads of mains sockets that will rarely if ever be used.

Unless we're away on a long enough trip that I have to take my laptop to be able to work I don't think we have anything in the motorhome with a 230v plug on it.

We have three in our van, a Bessacarr. Plenty for our use though we use an extension cable for the Remoska as it only has a short cable.

Our 718 EB has one behind the drivers seat and one by the sink in the front. Two more inside the cupboard above the fridge for TVs and sat. There are usb points above the passenger seat for charging things plus another on the dash.

We’ve got quite a few on our Kontiki.

230v:-
2 at high level in the cab
3 in the lounge area,
2 in the kitchen
2 in the bedroom

12v:-
1 in cab
1 in lounge area
1 in bedroom

No USB outlets though, however, I use a multi gang plug in 12v adaptor

I think it's a design philosophy thing. Continental travellers simply don't sit on sites with EHU. They are out and about, using aires and seeing the best of what Europe offers.
CC and CCC sites must be very alien to them!

It could be restricted by the amperage of the socket circuit breaker and whether it's on a ring or radial circuit.
Too many sockets with too many high amp appliances could repeatedly trip the breaker.

It's a 2016 - we love it. Great spec and trim with the added winter pack and VIP pack it's hard to beat in our opinion. Great size garage and the diesel heating make it an all year round van.

We have a 718XLB, 2017 ,apart from 1socket in bedroom, one in tele slot one under worktop in line with sink, don't know who thought of that one or the one behind the drivers seat, so if you have anything plugged in and turn the driver's seat it swacks the plug out!! yes lack of plugs ,but build quality no worse than others so far.

Sorry, yes forgot about that one, we also fitted solar panels and 3000 watt inverter , fitting separate sockets for this , turning the sockets upside down to identify them. When we took the bottom of the 3 drawers in kitchen to fit cables we found one of the heater air pipe squashed by sink drain and hot and cold water pipes down to about a half inch from about 3 inches.

Why not just fit loads of 12V/240V sockets around the van, irreverent of whether you use it on EHU or not as some people seem to suggest matters
Got loads around my house, doesn’t mean I have to use them all just when I need them
Personally the more you have the better, can’t see a problem with having too many but can see a problem with not having enough thou

European vans are not expected to enjoy regular EHU, hence the absence of many mains outlets.
I charge my devices using the 12V supply.

Our 510 has 3, one up by the tv socket, high up by the roof above kitchen, one on front of kitchen , in the space berween work top and first draw, so the cable of anything plugged in gets in the way of the top draw, and the one behind nearside front seat. Think this is for lap tops at table etc. All on the nearside, same side as the electrics box and ehu hookup. Enough for us, we only them for kettle and charging.
Also 2 usb above nearside cab area, and another in glove bix on dash in front of driver,(ford transit).

Most continual vans limit the amount of sockets.

It’s because they leak like hell and the manufacturers care about you(y)

We have 8 mains sockets. We use them quite often, and we manage to use them when not on EHU. It’s a kind of magic.
