I bought myself a new laptop a while back, it comes with a charger that plugs into a USB C port on the laptop.

In my naivety, I thought I could then just plug the laptop into my van to charge - using the USB sockets - and a USB A to USB C cable, as you can for an Android phone. But No - it chucks a message up saying it needs a USB PD power supply of 10w or more

Anyone found a way round this? I have got a small plug in inverter, but it seems quite clunky to use that in conjunction with the original 240v power supply.

You can get high power USB C chargers that plug into cigarette lighters.

Our Apple thing just charges slower if we use another one.

Something like below should do if your van has the correct port

My Lenovo requires a 19v input to charge and I bought a 12v to 19v charger that plugs into our 12v cigar lighter socket by our TV.
I also have a Dell laptop which requires a 20v input and I also use a 12v adaptor to charge that on our van.
USB C negates the need for proprietary chargers. It’s pretty much universal and will negotiate the correct voltage/ current. All you need is is a 12V supply correctly fused as the draw can be quite large.

Thanks Everyone. I’d hoped that an existing 5v 2.1A USB A socket would be good enough, but it seems not. I’ll look to replace one of the existing double USB A sockets I fitted a few years ago with one of the ones that Insider links to.

Not all computers will work on any old charger with a type C plug, I tried a few for my XPS13 without success, one of the suppliers replied to me when I returned it apologising and explained that some manufactures required a smart supply.
The one that Googlebot recommends works very well on my Dell.

On 2nd thoughts, I'll give that one a go rather than a wire-in - I've got a convenient cigarette lighter socket in the back of the van, I can use it in the car then as well if need be. If it doesn't work, it's Amazon, it can go back!

Thanks everyone.

I can not see any of the "one of these" the responders above have mentioned. Has something changed on the site?

It might have something to do with ad blocking, I can see the images on my phone but not my laptop.

You are using an ad blocker, I have same problem, although for me only seems to block Amazon links.
If I want to view any I just turn off the ad block and then reinstate it when finished.

Thanks for info on the add blockers. Turned off and the links appeared with a refresh. Strange, I have always had add blockers on and never had this issue before.

I bought one of the chargers that Googlebot linked to, works a treat, thank you!

As luck would have it I put a 12v cigarette lighter socket in the back of the driver's seat base ages ago, to plug an endless breeze fan in to. It's straight off the leisure battery so perfect for the laptop charger.

Personally I cant think of anything I do on a laptop, that I can't do with my android tablet. Or even an Ipad.. charges via standard USB, portable, runs most Apps and is secure...

I'm a newbie
Visit a cafe or restaurant & ask to plug in. Try to get a laptop with good battery life. If I'm using it for work I try to stay somewhere with ehu every few days to charge laptop. Do washing too.

My dell laptop is charged via USB C, but takes a slow charge of 60w or fast charge at 130w, which no 12v USB or 12v cigarette lighter socket adaptor can handle, so I use a switched 300w inverter connected directly with the leisure battery.
