I live in France and have a Burstner MH based on a Fiat Ducato. We bought it in 2015 but it is a 2014 model.

When we were at the dealers last week he mentioned that we should think about getting the timing belt changed as it is due every 5 years BUT when I spoke to the Fiat garage to arrange a service he said it is every 8 years.

What do you think??? Five or eight? Don't want to make an expensive mistake, but don't want to incur unnecessary costs either...

Ours is an Adria on Fiat Ducato base and is booked in for a full service. The garage asked when the cam belt was last changed, turns out it was in 2013 before we bought it so we’re going to bite the bullet costwise and get it done. Imagine it would be very expensive if it broke.

Its definitely 5 years here but it would be worth contacting another Fiat main dealer and asking them to check your VIN number for clarification.
It may be different in France. The cost to change it here would be around £600, if you also changed the water pump - Not at the Fiat dealers!!!

Does the water pump need changing as well? We’ve been quoted £370 for doing the cam belt.

That's a good price even for here.
The water pump is a bit of an issues as its not likely to be worn out, but you need to remove the timing belt to replace it!!
They are around £100 and is fitted behind the belt:Eeek:

Our cambelt, water pump and tensioners all done in a oner by a trade member on here @dave newell lvs . We went all the way down from Glasgow to get it done (well, we were touring North Wales anyway!).

I noticed the terms "timing belt" and "cam belt" were used in this thread. The Fiat X250 multijet engine does not have either, It has a timing chain (two in fact) they are lifetime engine parts.
Other Fiat engines have a "timing drive belt" which is replaced periodically.

I think what you were confused with is the "accessory drive belt"

I am no techie, far from it, but I believe you are wrong.
Surely the 180 bhp lump has a chain cam but the 150 & 130 bhp versions have belts.
I would love to think they all had chains as my 150bhp engine is approaching five years old but I can already feel a large bill on the way.

The Fiat 2.3 litre engine on the X250 and X290 UK models has belts. AFAIK the only one that has a chain is the 3 litre engine which used to be an option on the X250 and early X290, but is no longer available.

The 180bhp also has a belt as we!l I think, you are thinking about the older 3 litre fiat which had a chain but is no longer in production.

absolutely 5 years, it doesn't really have anything to do with differing engines or model years. It's five years because it's made of a material that degrades over time. All belts from all manufacturers are made of the same stuff, so yes change it and the water pump and all the idlers and tensioner with OEM QUALITY PARTS.. I cannot stress OEM QUALITY enough here either.

Sorry Fellas, I was wrong,

My Ducato 2010 X250 160hp multijet has a chain and I assumed all after 2010 would also for obvious reasons but not so:

I think??? the 100hp, 160hp and the 180hp have a "for life" chain and,
The 120 130 and 150 have a belt and as said require changing as recommended.

I am so glad I do not have a belt, I just completed a lap of the island (20,000km) and there are some places out there where a broken belt would mean a considerable problem.

I did my lap anti-clockwise of course because it is shorter (we drive on the left)

I think you will find that is because Australian models have different engines. In Europe all of the engine options of the X290 Ducato now use the 2.3 litre engine and all use belts. The only difference is the power output. The 180hp version used to use the 3 litre engine which had a chain, but that has now been replaced by a similar output 2.3 engine with a belt.

Went to Simpson’s at Great Yarmouth where I’ve always had my servicing done as they understand motorhomes and are Fiat Professional. They can also grease the AlKo rear axle.
After their reception bod assuring me that the belt didn’t need changing ??? I booked it in anyway.
Bloody expensive but they seem to have made a decent job of it. We’ve done probably over 3k Miles since and nothing has gone bang.

I have just had mine changed at 5 years. I was hoping to get another year out of it, but to be cautious I asked the garage to inspect it, which they did and found minor deterioration so it was changed - I saw the old belt after so I know they were not scamming me.

Anyone changed their belt (X250/2012/150bhp) as DIY ? is it do able ?

Think mine needs doing.....

If i could get it done for £400 here i'd just go for it but it will likely be much more, hence i need to check if DIY is even worth thinking about.

Went down to my friendly camper van garage that i was amazed to find had re-opened last week and he was keen to offer me a nice price.... got her booked in for 4th May for the belt only. I asked about the water pump and he said it didn't need doing with only 40k on the clock, also it was a chunk of change more if i had really wanted him to do it.

So at least we can get that task ticked off the list.
