Mrs DDJC has decided to look into getting the bigger licence.

Due to an old back injury, she finds it painful to push a clutch, so we are an auto-only family.

Does anyone know of a provider in the South East who will do a c1 course on an auto? Should be a formality as SWMBO is a superb driver of our 7.2m mh. She did a 0towing test a few years ago so is still in the zone !!!

Have you tried to find a company that will let you do it in your own vehicle as I doubt if any training center would have autos.

You could try Hills at Plumpton a friend did had some caravan towing instruction there in own vehicle they were very pleased with them.

Problem is that our bus is 3500 kg. I think the test stipulates that the vehicle must be more than 3500. So if we put half a ton of sand to add weight, the testing vehicle is then not legal.

Seems to be a gap in the market. All electric and most hybrids have no gears. From 2030 there will be no more derv and petrol vehicles, so why aren't testing companies doing more auto training and testing?

I’m sure some training centres have class 3 lorries that are auto.

I know a bus company that only do tests in autos.

So your wife wants to attain a C1 licence to drive a MH weighing not greater than 3500kg.

Don't understand the reasoning behind this, when you can drive an up to 3500kg vehicle on a normal driving licence. Think I must be missing something along the way !!!

Could she do the training in your vehicle and if she gets on OK upgrade it to 3850 before taking a test.
Or you could be naughty and by a plate on ebay and pretend it's 3850, after all once you upgrade it will still be exactly the same vehicle.

Possibly there is an upgrade or replate in the future?

I'm about to do my CAT C, if she were to do that she would also get her C1. Taking that in an Auto, which all schools use, gives you a manual C & C1 entitlement as long as you have a manual car licence.

Yes we are having semi air fitted and intend to upgrade to 3800 or thereabouts.

My ex son in law did a course so that he could drive my van and it was all on auto boxes, which it seems that a lot of modern trucks are nowadays. Worth checking

edit….. Wot he said above ⬆️

A quick google shows lots of places offering Auto C1 courses - just be careful you are talking to a training company and not an agency....
