Hi all,

Going round this new motorhome and finding plenty of issues to keep me busy....

I've taken the outside cover off the exhaust for the water heater, to give it a bit of a clean as it was a bit smelly when running. Think it needs a service maybe, or even a new burner module.

This is what i found (post dust spiders and web removal)........

Is it right that there is an empty gap between the gas outlet, and the box that the flames come out of? I did notice that the flame sometimes comes out of that gap when i tested it running with the cover off, i guess the metal plate cover stops that though when all back together. I'm waiting for someone to book me in for a service on all the gas appliances, but wondering if i should order some new parts before that even happens to save some time. Also got another thread going re a leak on the internal side of this ancient beast so don't really want to order a new burner if the leak is a write off issue.

I guess if it is a write off issue, what is the done thing to replace a water heater. Whats the modern alternative that would be the least hassle to replace this one?

Cheers all
Gary

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
The gap between the gas jet and burner is correct.
Your heater isn't necessarily a write-off.
I've stripped and completely refurbished my Cascade with parts from an eBay advertiser.

See the video (it's not my video) here:

I'm told there is a replacement which fits with an adapter plate but I've no experience of it.

Thanks for this..... Mine stays lit ok, the flame looks weak though, and it smells a bit in the van, but could have been all the spiders and spiders webs in there. Hopefully a servive will find the issue.

Presumably the wet inside is due to having drained the system.
It certainly needs good wire brushing to remove the corrosion on the ali casting and burner and the rotted rubber washer on the drain plug needs replacing.

A weak point on these is the tie rod securing the water tank canister to the front plate as they corrode and snap, as did mine.

Extracting this broken bit of the tie rod wasn't easy.....

The steel tie rod was severely corroded in the ali front plate, weakening it and causing it to snap.......

New tie rod........

O'leary's do the same as advised in my post #2

The blue thing is the thermistor. These heaters have been obsolete for years. You need to speak to Gary from arc systems on 07901 544431 he is the top man for these heaters.
His website is down but he answers the phone.
He is repairing the burner module from mine at the moment.
Your other option might be a second hand unit from eBay or a caravan breakers but they seem to run about £300 😱 probably better with a Malaga replacement if you can't obtain just the part

I'm a bit late to this chat, but did you get anywhere with the repair?

I'm struggling to get mine to ignite, it's not even making the rapid spark sound now.

Thanks

I know the thread is a year old. You could try Gary on the number in post #14 tomorrow. He’s very helpful.
