Every year someone will be affected by CO poisoning.

Deaths are reported in tents, caravans, boats, at home - and worse in any confined space.

My own MH has a CO detector - and earlier this year it went off, using the cooker too long with inadequate ventilation.

Cookers will be the main cause of any problem, heaters are normally flued or catalytic.

Recently I noticed my cooker burning orange, not blue - a sign of lack of oxygen - the other danger.

The cooker should always burn with a blue flame, orange will be a warning - answer

Fit a good quality CO detector - mine has a flashing LED as well as the test button

Stay safe

Had a very near escape when we were boating - it really is the silent killer - always, always fit a carbon monoxide detector, we survived by the skin of our teeth - very very lucky - almost a statistic

Years ago a dear friend of mine was delivering a yacht under sail, to save the battery he only used it for the navigation lights.

Below he and his crew used the gas cooker for heating and candles for lighting

The candles slowly went out and couldn't be re-lit............suddenly he realised what was happening.... the cooker had used up all oxygen...............

No CO detectors in those days..............

Great advice, but I also advocate paying a few pounds more for a display showing actual CO reading. These monitors will all alarm at 30 ppm but you need well over 100 to even be affected. Definitely best to be safe but useful to know how big the problem really is

I would agree, always best to know the level of danger, hypoxia is very subtle - it slows the brain down & you don't realise anything is wrong, so the better level of protection you have the better your chance of survival. We were very lucky - took 3 months to get over the effects, but much longer to get over the emotional ones.

That's a great piece of info(y) I've just checked the Screwfix page and you can get a FireAngel CO-9D 7-Year Digital CO Alarm @ ÂŁ23.99. It has just been reduced from ÂŁ29.99 while the display shows CO down to 10PPM.

I think I'll grab one tomorrow.

I have one that detects co2, and also detects gas apparently.... Not the one for the cooker etc but the one rumoured to be used to rob unsuspecting motorhomers

It was fitted by the previous owners and it was all I could do not to pee myself laughing while he was telling me about it

G'Day Fellow Funsters,

I've been to Screwfix for my new digital CO alarm. Pic attached.

We're not planning on using the van for a few weeks so shall I fit it today or would it be best if I gift wrap it and give it to Nicky for her birthday. She's always asking for unique presents so I think this will fit the bill nicely.

I trust you lot - any thoughts,

Andrew(y)

You old romantic, but beware, I still carry the scars from buying such presents

Ah yes, I didn't think about the physical injury bit.

I think I'll just fit it after all.:D

We have 2 one in the van and a second for when the safari room is up because our heater vents on that side of the van. Went of recently not the heater but the generator exhaust being blown into the safari room. Outboard engine fumes have done for people on boats often enough.

Oh, definitely birthday present. (y)

After all, what could show your love more than a means to prevent her from dying? And so unusual - you know that she won't be expecting it.

So she knows it's really hers, don't forget to lend her the tools so she can fit it herself.

But women are difficult to read - might be as well to have a bottle of her favourite perfume on standby just in case. It keeps if unopened, so if she loves the CO detector, you can save the purfume for Christmas.

That's the great thing about FUN - you can be sure of quality advice on any difficult issue.
