Several years now
Last year Safeguard stuck their prices up a lot. So we went to Caravan Guard which was a lot cheaper.

Just had this years renewal from Caravan Guard. It was £402 which I thought not bad (full no-claims). Then I realised that they had included European breakdown and 9000 miles same as last year, well for us Europe is cancelled this year so I asked them to take off Euro breakdown and reduce mileage to 6000, could have possibly gone lower, but what the Hell.

Anyway, that brought the price down to £283 !!! Happy Happy Happy !!!

I did the same end of January. Quite pleased with them. Haven't had to use them . Thank goodness .I did ask last week about the feasibility of reducing premiums now I'm not using the van but they said they have no plans to do that but I can sorn it if I wanted to

Me too well happy, I called them to let them know I had sold my car and MoHo would be only vehicle, in addition I wanted to swap the 13 yrs NCD onto the MoHo policy, no problem they said, reduced premium and they are not going to penalise me for having MoHo as only motor.
result.

  • Nice One!

You can add the eu breakdown and cover for the same cost with caravanguard, plus an admin fee of £15,which I thought was reasonable. (y)

Unfortunately they won't insure imports.

I got a quote from them yesterday for our Carthago ... it was over £600 with a £450 excess!!!! Our Comfort quote was a lot less with £200 excess ... so I won't be using them, it just goes to prove that you have to do the ringing around etc to get the best price/policy for your own circumstances.

I’ve just had a quote off them and they are double of my most expensive quote at £1900. Had 2 bumbs last year so not a happy bunny 1st accidents in 43 years. Quotes ranching from £700 to £1300. Last year £380. P/S don’t wait for AIB to ring you back they were the only ones who I had to call back then way too high

They insured me from collection point in Germany, full comp. 12 months. But fully expensive as well  - renewal quote received is even worse

I know people struggle to find fully comp insurance for collecting a vehicle from abroad (ie whilst on foreign soil) ... can you please confirm that this was definitely the case as others may want to use them.

Yes, 100%, received in writing before collection and registered against the VIN number.

Drive from Germany to home and to a pre-arranged garage inspection. After the inspection was full cover whilst in storage only and not for on road use until V5 and UK number plates sorted.

If I remember correctly it was for 14 days driving cover but can check back if needed.

But it was in excess of £1000 PA and just received renewal where it went up - as you can imagine going through the mill of renewals now!

Some of the others are 40% less for similar or better cover

It was a few years ago when I spoke to Caravan Guard once they found out it was a personal import they refused to quote.

Did a quote on Caravan & Motorhome club website where they guarantee to beat current renewal by £25

Guess what - could save £25!

Surprised at the heavy limitation if you don't use their preferred windscreen contractor

What is covered We will pay: • to replace or repair broken glass in the windscreen or windows of your motorhome or any scratching to the bodywork caused by the broken glass, as long as there has not been any other loss or damage. Claims under this section will not affect your No Claim Discount.

The most we will pay Up to £100 for each incident, unless the repair or replacement is carried out by our recommended glass specialist.
We will not pay a sum greater than the market value of your motorhome at the time of the claim under Section 3 Windscreen damage or the amount your motorhome is insured for (less the excess), whichever is the lower figure. What is not covered • The excess shown in the schedule, unless the glass is repaired and not replaced.

hi all,
one for caravan guard.
just changed our old coach built to a new van conversion, usual hassle getting prices until we came to Caravan guard. (used them many years ago for a caravan) between £60 to £100 cheaper than anyone else, have used life-sure for years but they couldn't get close. included 6000 miles and euro breakdown etc.
very happy.

We were not impressed with Caravan Guards breakdown service though and Safeguard came in cheaper at last renewal. Having said that just had renewal quote from Safeguard and its gone up so will be shopping around again today

Would you mind providing some details on why you were not happy with their breakdown service ? we normally use Safeguard which has been great and uses AA for breakdown but Caravanguard is a lot cheaper for what appears to be similar cover.

It may have just been us but we broke down on the A1 on one of the hottest days of the year and they sent a driver out with a jack and a battery booster and once he knew it wasn't the battery (even though I had told them the battery was fine when I called) we then had to wait for recovery and the truck they sent wasn't really suitable for our van (just fitted on but towbar dragged on the ground when loading). Then, when the Dealer we were dropped off at couldn't look at the van I asked them if they could recover us somewhere else and they said no - not for the same issue (fair enough) but when I said I was willing to pay they said the Motorhome was too big.
I wont bore you with the tale of the same van breaking down in France and their idea that we could leave it there and return as foot passengers....

Have stayed with Safeguard as it happens as its only gone up 70p a month for this year.

My first ever quote from Caravan Guard was this week, higher excess, less cover for valuables, larger additional premium for recovery plus higher excess for windscreens. The premium for the new van was over £200 more than Comfort who we've been with for years.

Got two weeks free from caravan guard when we collected the new mh two weeks ago, also got a quote from them and due to the value they wanted a tracker fitted. Even with tracker option they were £150 more expensive than Comfort who charged £319 with no tracker.

Got a flyer for caravan guard when I paid the deposit on mh so I gave them a try for quote. Was very pleased with price (£258 for me & my wife, no recent experience of driving mh), with breakdown included. Went on most of the comparison sites and a couple did come in a little cheaper (couple of quid) but they didn't include breakdown cover.
So I'll be using them for first year and see what renewal price is next year.

Sorry should of read few previous posts regarding breakdown cover (not a good advert for them)
May have to try a few others, safeguard, comfort.
Cheers

You only find out how good or bad or expensive or cheap your insurance is when you have to make a claim. Caravan Guard were excellent when my awning was ripped of the roof in France. No problems all sorted.

I have imported quite few motorhomes from mainly France and Germany.
Due to restrictions I do not wish to air here, it's unlikely your going to find a UK insurer to cover on a VIN until it arrives on UK soil.
Please check again as you may be shocked if you have in the past.
I set up a company in France and insure from there.
One point worth noting is I never know what an insurance company is like until I have a claim. Then I find out, UK Companies are notorious at buying business until you have a claim.
Just a view

Many years ago I can remember a broker telling me "that it doesnt cost a lot to insure pushbikes against fire!"
I have just endured this years ring around and as Clipgate says we really dont know how good they will be until you make a claim, obviously the more you pay the better the service????

I am with caravanguard as safeguard had upped their prices. As it was in March, and due to the covid situation I asked them for uk plus uk breakdown as the Initial quote was for EU and EU breakdown. They will let you add EU cover at a later date for a % of the cover, plus an admin fee of around £15 which I thought was okay. Maybe if you check with them they will advise the cost of breakdown cover. Or if you ate with nationwide banking it is covered on the flexia account. (y)

I am with nationwide, I have the flex plus account. Didn't realise the motorhome would be covered under the breakdown cover. Thanks for that.

Covers travel insurance as well dependant on your age, medical history etc. If 70 plus there is a premium to pay but worth it. Depends what you are planning to do. (y)

You may want to check the length of your motorhome as Nationwide i believe have a length limit.

For those with who are thinking of moving to Caravan Guard make sure you arrange to be sent full details of your existing policy's NCD once you've changed over, the reason for this is that when we were with CG and then moved to another insurer CG 'lost' our NCD info and we had to back-track to the insurer before them to get it!

I just sent a photo of my ncd by e mail and it was accepted (y)
