Looking to insure my new to me Bailey Autograph. Caravan Guard came up with competitive quote, but UK breakdown included (at cost) which can't be removed, and if I click the "up to nine months European cover" the quote goes up by £50. But surely, any comprehensive cover is also valid, on same terms, for EU trips? I rang the provider, who seemed unable to get my point. Anyone shed light on this? I never go abroad for more than four weeks, and don't want to pay £50 for nothing...

You wouldn’t be paying £50 for nothing. If you have an accident or a breakdown abroad and the van has to be recovered back to the UK the cost can be very expensive. Personally I think the quote of £50 is quite reasonable.

Hi,
I have been with Caravan Guard for a number of years and have found them to be very competitive. Having said that I have luckily not have had to make a claim.
Phil.

I had a breakdown in France a couple of weeks ago, my breakdown insurance cost £65 through my insurers Comfort, it not only paid for the recovery to a local garage, it also contributed £500 towards the hotel i had to stay in whilst the van was being repaired and found and booked me into the hotel, they also kept me informed of the progress the garage was making on my repair. Probably the best £65 I ever spent.

Apologies, have misrepresented what I was trying to say! The "cover for nine months" is NOT for breakdown/recovery. That is the subject of another add-on to the insurance, which I don't need as I already have UK and EU cover for that. The rep was basically saying that unless I paid the extra, my fully comp cover would only be third party in the EU. Which don't sound right...

I believe that insurers are only required to provide the minimum legal cover in the EU so it does not surprise me that they want extra money to cover fully comp in the EU, but different companies have different policies, my motorhome insurance covers me fully comp 365 days in the EU, my motorcycle insurance only covers me fully comp for 90 days per trip after that it reverts to minimum cover.
