YouTube - NEC Show report 1!!

If you're talking about "The Caravan Channel" on Sky 166, then I've got to say I'm a HUUUUUUGE fan.:thumb:
For a start, Chris Gosling, who presents the show happens to be an exremely nice and approachable bloke. I know, ffiona and I spent considerabletime chatting with him on his stand at the NEC on Tuesday.::bigsmile:
I've NEVER missed an episode and hopefully, never will. I freely admit that there are improvements that could be made to the show, but that could be said of anything in life. Considering the miniscule budget that Chris has to work with, personally, I think he's doing a superb job.
I mean, for crying out loud, we're one of the most fanatical 'vanning countries in Europe and yet what do the BBC or the big channels give us? Either bugger all or when they do offer anything (ie, the caravan show on channel 5) it's presented by smart arse idiots who obviosly dont give a monkeys about us,the 'vanning community or 'vanning!!!!!!!!:Eeek:

All can say is "Well done Chris, keep it going, improve where you can and THANKYOU for giving this country a dedicated channel on a subject which the rest of the press and the "non vanning" public of the UK seem to treat with (in some cases) downright hostility and derision!

Bitter and twisted? You dammed right I am on this subject.
People like us have pumped BILLIONS into the UK economy and it's about time we got the credit we deserve!:thumb:

I do so agree the production quality is improving as the series goes on.But I do wish they would buy an extra couple of mikes and an extra camera for cutaway shots instead of fast panning anf zooming.
Why mainstream tv hasn't done anything beats me-perhaps they think we are all like trainspotters and 'Gobbo' Clarkson and chums don't help. I forgive James May cause he is using a caravan for his present series.

Too generous.

If he'd dumped TG mentality and used a quality caravan on the lines of the lovely series they did in the USA then how much better would it have been. They could have actually done something constructive for British industry.

The caravan channel

I've watched it a few times over the years its been on, I wish it had a primetime spot on ITV about 7.30 each night then BBC at 8.00 straight after the back to ITV at 8.30
With a omnibus version on the weekends , I'm sure it would have a lot more feedback
to make and make a real alternative to the soul depressing soaps some of us have to put up with.keep up the good work

Chris is improving but still find his presentation boring as hell, if only someone else could feature on it or narrate it for him.

Yes he's trying hard and deserves to do well but will never get there with him presenting it.

It may not be as 'polished' as some of the professional/commercial high budget progs but it does grow on you:thumb:

I know Chris' presentation is a little quaint sometimes but he has much more 'cred' than some of the celebrity presenters

A bit like warts, eh, xgx? ::bigsmile:

As I'll probably be seeing some of you folk at Newark, I thought I'd join in. We're also doing quite a lot more about motorhomes this year, so you may as well have someone to moan at directly.

For johng, the show that people mean when they talk about fast zooms and pans is Caravan Sights, which hasn't been made since 2003, I think - but it is still showing on Men and Motors. We certainly do pan, but never fast, and certainly not fast zooms, which are simply aimed at distracting viewers from the lack of content! Several people came up and moaned about this at the NEC - then I asked if they'd seen the presenter, they said yes, young guy with a dragged-along family - but didn't recognise me! As Jim says, I've got a face for radio, but do appear in every show. . .

I dunno what roadrunner is talking about with "getting there" . . . I've made over 60 half-hour programmes, the broadcaster reckons it gets between 100,000 and 150,000 viewers per show (that's spread over the 8 showings each show has in its two week life), we get around 50 emails a week from viewers, and it has provided me with a small but rather nice living and an enjoyable lifestyle for about two and a half years. And I like doing it - having talked often to the big broadcasters, their news people like caravans/motorhomes for their story value (everyone's doing it!), but their features people really think it is too minority to do without a laugh-at attitude.

I also do some other specialist presentation on radio and tv, where my peculiar talents seem to suit the audience :Eeek: .

I think that the reality of The Caravan Channel is that if I didn't do it, no-one would - but sooner or later, there'll be a similar programme pop up which looks like editorial content, but is advertising - it's happening all the time now, but most people are too dim to see that a high degree of polish and finish in a minority programme today usually means that someone's stitching in lots of dosh!

Best wishes

Chris

Hi Chris,
You are so right when you say 'If I didn't do it no one else would'. The standard of mainstream British tv is utter rubbish. In the states you have a wide variety of leisure activity programmes, some with accompanying magazines. The attitude to camping, caravanning and motorhoming is more tolerant there than here.
I think its because the capitalists can't make money out of you annually selling their cheap tat package holidays. We tend to think for ourselves and plan our own agendas.
I think a lot of this is the attitude to children in this country. This is the reason we find it suits us and we don't have to pay for the use of the cruet!!!
Keep on doing what you're doing I CAN see marked improvements.

I think that part of the problem is that we expect a lot in terms of technical standards, and presentation - and then that over-rides the content.

Even now, after the massive proliferation of TV broadcasters stemming from the satellite and digital changes, most original programming in the UK is made by or for the beeb or mainstream ITV - it's then repeated ad nauseum across a range of channel, who either buy it cheaply or get it aspart of some kind of deal.

Consumers (that's what they call you, guys), don't know enough to realise this - like people who think that Caravan Sights (last shot in 2003) is up-to-date! That show was shot on a fairly minimal budget, and would probably cost around £7.000/£10,000 per episode today.

The Caravan Channel is made by one person, on a budget that is literally a small fraction of this. It simply could not be made by any of the big broadcasters. Many of the people who offer gratuitous criticism tend not to know much about what they're talking about - for instance, employing a TV presenter would immediately stop production, simply because their fee would be more than the current cost of producing the show . . . A flashier outsourced professional edit would have the same cost implication.

A big part of the programmes appeal, to me at least, is that it is simple and to the point - we talk about, show, and focus upon caravanning, motorhoming and tent camping. The programme is usually content-rich, and pretty average on presentation - not because style doesn't matter, but because I'd rather have content first, and my ideal viewer is someone who feels the same way.

My honest viewpoint on all of this, ultimately, is that people who like The Caravan Channel should watch it, and if you don't like it, don't watch it!

As I said before IT IS getting better.
Why not ask Ricky Tomlinson who is a motorhomer or Margaret Beckett or Edwina Currie both are tuggers:ROFLMAO: Rowland Rivron became a convert and takes every opportunity to tell people.
I'm afraid mainstream TV tends to view Caravanners, campers and such as nutters.
simple solutions like presentation skills mey be available via the Aerial trust (a beeb supported initiative) contact via local BBC radio station,it is also non-partisan.
You have all the knowledge there. My nephew is media diector for a large international firm and formerly a tv director do you wanme to aske him for any leads?
How about this for an idea? Celebrity caravanners and motorhomers.
Good luck.

One of those interesting things here, I think. The trouble is that I personally find the celebrity thing a bit cringe-making, and often slightly or seriously condesending - so-called celebrities so often seem to talk down to ordinary mortals like you and me!

It's one of the things that at times gets me about the dear old caravan club - they tend to drag out their stable of celebs every show.

No, I think that for as long as I make it, you'll probably have to put up with me. Unless, of course, you want to give me the dosh to employ someone else to present it - go on, have a whip-round!
