Hi all
Just a quickie is it worth paying for membership to caravan and motorhome club sites. Have looked at a site that has availability but have to be a member. We can't even get a price for pitches without becoming a member. Is this normal?

We are members. We use club sites, CL sites and their holiday insurance. It's definitely worth it for us. The club sites aren't cheap but it depends what you want. With the C & MH Club sites, you know what you're going to get in terms of set up and facilities.

Both main clubs, you need to be a member to book on most sites, CMHC sites are generally very well kept with excellent facilities, but can be a bit regimented. If you do join there are an excellent choice of 5 van CL's and CS's, which are great value and mostly quite secluded.

I have been a member over 10 years . CMC comes in for a bit of stick on the forum. I never use their sites peak season but all sites are expensive peak season. They are high quality sites with good facilities in good locations. They have thousands of CLs, small 5 only sites which are much cheaper and good value in peak season.
Some sites are members only , some are not. All in all a well run club with some beautiful sites.
Phil

Thank you we're having trouble finding somewhere all fully booked. I think we will probably just pay it and get something booked. Need a break asap thanks very much for replies

You can save your membership fees in a seven night stay compared to non member prices.
Just out of interest where are you thinking of going ?

We are full timers and spend our time in the UK and mainland Europe. For £54, a fraction over £1 a week, its of great value. Off peak we stay on well appointed sites for around £20 per night. Ideal on wet rainy blowing periods on good hardstanding. We use the CL network every four or five days for topping up and emptying the tanks looking for the cheapest in the area and not even staying the night sometimes. Saves all the hassle of trying to sneak the cassette into a public loo and hunting for water.
For non full timers you have to look at how you use your MH. Wild parking spots during the warmer weather where you can sit out and just lounge about can be difficult. Using a CL just to sit and relax in a bit of shade and a bit of outside cooking makes the difference. The UK is not like France, not having Aires to use so, you have to camp as you feel comfortable with. Access to the sites and CL network gives an opportunity to mix and match your usage.
We have booked CMC club sites for an August trip around Scotland, Reserved at no advance cost. I would not normally reserve pitches and would and hope to wild a fare bit whilst in Scotland. Being August and not to sure how busy around the West coast it is going to be in August. By advance booking I have guaranteed places to stop and will cancel at no cost if the places are not required. So again I feel that the £54 is well worth the years membership.
Good luck

We've just done it and booked Southport for Monday to Friday next week. We have 2 dogs and it sounds ideal for walking into town beach etc. We live in guiseley both Leeds gateway to sales but the dogs love a good beach and hopefully some bars might be open for us 👍

I little tip when trying to book a site on the CMC in peak time and you keep getting a response of 'your chosen dates do not match'.

Tap in the date something like 2nd September 2020 to 3rd. This is off peak and will bring up the September calendar for the site. As its off peak mid week you will normally get a vacant pitch. Then press the back space on the calendar for August/July. The months availability will come up showing yellow dates blocked out as full. You then see available dates in blue. Pick a date to suit that way saves repeatedly picking dates and getting no where. Hope that helps.

Thank you very much appreciated. Hopefully we will get some use out of it 👍

If you join and use a current members number as referral (there is a box for it) both you and the current member receive a £10 voucher within a few days.

Obviously I would be happy to provide you with my membership number

Oh Oh Please! we are really shit at this. We saw the bit where it said have you been recommended and said no. There really is no hope for us or for you getting £10 for that matter. Slow learners and brain dead we think. Btw it's the Mrs writing this he's already had a few and can't see the screen. On a plus were going to Southport for a few days and can't wait 🌞😂😎🏖👍xxx

Scoffsontour....you'll like southport. The pitch is by the beach, pier and Victoria Park is right next door with an entrance from the site

Morrisons across the road and loads of eateries in Ocean Plaza and of course Lord Street!!

I know because I live there!!!!

We struggled to find more than 2 consecutive pitch nights available where we wanted to go. Had to book the most expensive serviced pitch because that was all that the CMC site had left. Still worth it just to get away at last.

Oh dear, you’ve opened a can of worms
Can-0-worms indeed
we were members for several years But decided in the end that we didn’t use U.K. sites enough & we don’t need/ want all the facilities. Plus of course they are expensive (To us) when all you need/want is to park for the night.

now it’s wild camping for us. We are both retired & wife has Severe arthritis so apart from the disabled facilities on site that’s all they offer that we use.
swimming is her best exercise so we tend to find a municipal pool, home or abroad, & use the facilities after/before a swim. It’s a no brainier for us as most sites don’t have pools or if they do The disabled access is patchy to say the least.
it’s what works for us.
we use Acci sites in eu off Season. For us it’s far better value.

We are members of both clubs and use both their sites - we like them. More importantly, when I bought my first MH I could not get cost-effective insurance with no experience but the Caravan and Motorhome club did me a policy at less than 50% than anyone else including European cover. I know everyone has their own history when it comes to insurance but my policy with them more than pays for my membership many times over. We are happy with them

As has been said, sometimes it's the "member offers" that make a difference with the two main clubs. We use CCC for insurance, and CAMC for various other offers - 4% off all our Sainsbury's shopping soon adds up and easily pays for the membership fee . Free booking and flexibility to change dates is a plus, as well as the consistency of standards. Another tip - if you ever go to London or a concert at the O2, use Abbey Wood site - excellent location!
