Hi All,
Going to Spain next week and staying on one site for March, want to hire a car for a few weeks, do I need anything else other than my driving licence.
Thanks Mike.

If I recall correctly you need to obtain a code from DVLA to enable the car hire company to verify your UK driving licence details.

Go for a reasonably well known hirer with a comprehensive insurance. I have heard of some horror stories of companies keeping monies due to “damages” not noted by the hirers.

Video the car before you drive off with it. Or pay full waiver

Often a requirement in the UK, but have never been asked for that in Spain. You’ll need driving licence, passport & credit card. Gold Car don’t have a good reputation. I think Spain is one of the better places to rent a car in Europe. All inclusive deals are common and rates relatively low. I generally avoid the big operators (expensive) and go for local rental company with good reviews on relevant Tripadvisor forum.

Although I have some recollection of hearing about this, we regularly rent cars in Spain and her islands and have never been asked for it (which is good, because we've never done it ;) ).

So just a driving licence, passport and credit card (debit and pre-paid cards not accepted!).

Yes, AVOID Goldcar!

Buy insurance excess cover before you go - I use Hertz as they give you photos of dents in vehicle and tell you to check.

There are some very poor companies out there and some of the horror stories are true as I have discovered. Often the price seems very good but not always the case when you get there. Be aware of the fuel policy they operate.
Over the past years I have stuck with one company that have given me excellent service, this is in Malaga so may not be appropriate for you.

Agree with buying insurance cover here to cover any excess a foreign car hire company may try and take from your CC. Not expensive.

Horses for courses... insurance cover here for some countries makes sense, but in Spain it’s not difficult to get a genuine all inclusive deal so no excess. I’ve used local hire car rental companies many times, booking an inclusive deal online before I arrive. Nobody tries to sell me additional insurance and no need to go through all the faff of video/phone pictures. And when you return it, nobody checks it, because it’s not necessary. Ideal, but wouldn’t recommend that in Italy, USA etc. If you have 3rd party insurance you have to pay up for any damage and then recover your costs from the insurer - can be tedious. The biggest ruses to watch out are charges for not properly filling the fuel tank, companies that operate full - empty fuel policies and excessive charges for cars not cleaned fully before return.

I have found Spain OK for car hire but have still been ripped off by airport hires. When.I went to Ireland I booked after following the links on Martin Lewis's website and got a very good deal. Also watch out for take full and bring back full. Check the tank is really full when you collect. Also I always do a complete video of the inside and outside

I normally book car hire in Spain direct with Hertz/Thrifty. Last time I tried I was quoted £120 for 10 days (reasonable but more than a previous trip) so I tried one of the rental websites and found the same vehicle from Hertz at £80. With fuel full to full and my own excess cover - great value!
