We have a 6m coach built and love Cornwall and use buses and electric bikes to see what we can, but obviously the bus service is restricted, and our bike range is limited to 10 miles. So we thought a small hire car would be great for 3 days or so to get to small coves and isolated places. CAMC recommend Enterprise but I have only ever found vans available. So can anyone recommend a national car hire company with delivery to site or collect and drive to depot that they have used?

I wouldn't tend to recommend national car hire companies at all. I've always got better service and lower prices from local companies, even if the cars might be a year or two older rather than brand new.

We do a search prior to travel. Look for small local hire companies. Usually deliver .
We're off to Devon next month and have found a small hire company at a very good price..
On isle of wight last year second hand car dealer did a bit of hiring as well. 10 year old fiesta but did the job.

Where in Cornwall are you looking to hire from or which site to deliver to?
We visited Padstow in 2020 and came across a brilliant family owned car rental company who delivered and collected from the site for us.
Cheaper than Enterprise and the other nationals.
The only thing that pi££Ed me off was that the greedy campsite owner wanted to charge us for bringing the car onto site.
Couldn’t understand what the difference was between a car and caravan or a motorhome and a car on the same pitch. Not been back since.
Car rental company was brilliant though:
Try AB Hire Alan Hosie info@abhire.co.uk

Before we moved to Cornwall , we used enterprise at Truro even though we were at Newquay site , as they bring it too you at site and you take them back to Truro , then on last day of hire you drive back too Truro return car they take you back to Newquay or wherever
Also if camc member get 10 percent off the price

Just looked they look good. We used a company that hired older cars on tenerriffe it was a lot better than one of the big ones for what we wanted

Yes thinking local may be the way forward.

Great tip thanks, will give them a try next time we are there.

Yes a member but seem to have a limited amount of cars, tried some dates and only have vans available

We used enterprise in norfolk last year wi th CAMC. By the time you had added all the extras in the price was through the roof. Won’t do that again!
Yes that's what I am afraid of😒

to say I m a fan of enterprise have used them a lot for for years good service and they don’t charge for every little scratch or ding which is inevitable. They have a card which is used to measure any damage which is actually quite large mid areas. But like everything you pay your money and take your choice. May not be the cheapest but overall I’d give them a 10/10

Slightly off topic but if you hire regularly, it's worth having your own policy for the extra collision waiver / damage insurance they always want to sell you. It's around £50 for a year, for unlimited hires across Europe.

Provided you accept that you're going to have to find the deposit on hire yourself and have two parties to deal with trying to sort out any claim.

Enterprise had stopped delivering due to the pandemic when we were there but I’d like to think that has changed now.
However, car availability was an issue and their prices were through the roof.
The CAMC discount rate had to be booked through a dedicated phone number and after much faff, their discounted rate was much higher than the rate for anyone ringing Enterprise directly for the same car/deal like for like. So much for CAMC benefits. I did raise it with CAMC but got zero response.
AB operate a little differently from the big boys in that they know Cornish country lanes can cause issues. They don’t use brand new cars and it may have a scrape or scratch on it when it arrives and as long as it doesn’t go back with a major bulge, they didn’t seem fussed. Our Nissan Note was about 4 years old and did the job for us.

Thanks for that. When flying abroad I always use local car hire. Cheap and convenient pick up and yes older cars with a ding or two which is OK by me. Will try the same in Cornwall.

Great thread as we've discussed this, although our e-bikes cover 80 or 90 miles. Brilliant advice as always.

Tried that with Enterprise at Truro they said they don't deliver to the local CAMC so I tried the CAMC to try and get the discount they said they could not book it so phoned Enterprise and they said to call the club , gave up . Went to Enterprise Web site they wanted £250 for 4 days hire, local one only had estate car for £650 for the same 4 days, eventually went to Hertz and got a van for £ 119 for 3 days .

You can always use these to cover your excesses and we got stung by the hire car company when in Malta as they gave us the oldest car I have every seen and then said we had a bump on it even though every panel already had a bump on it

Better safe paid out over £700 after we claimed on the £35 policy I took out to cover the car for a week

We’ve used Practical from New Milton 4 times over the years while staying at Lytton Lawn in Hampshire. Older cars (10yrs) seem to be all they can get but they deliver to and pick up from site. 10 days hire (still here today) £250 + £30 charge for drop off/collect. So £280 total for 10 days. If you’re ok with an older car with high mileage then they’re good. Great for day trips out and beach days. This years car Renault Megane GT Sport 61 plate.

I’ve used Enterprise a good number of times, good choice of vehicles, deliver to site if required, they also do one way hire, which can be very handy. As long as you ignore the inevitable upswell you generally get from car hire firms when collecting a car they’re great to deal with.

We have used this company quite a few times over the years. They either drop off at the campsite or one time we picked up from service station on a30. Based at Newquay airport

Which Isle of Wight second hand car dealer was it ? Do you have contact details please ?
I'm going there soon and this sounds exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for

Hired from Enterprise at Barnstaple when we stayed at Woollacombe a few years back, delivered and collected from site and the price for a week was okay. When we took it back they went through it with a fine toothed comb (see Gromett's thread ;)) insisting there was a new dent in the rear door. There wasn't and when I argued the point the manager came out and couldn't see it either. I won't use them again.
