Hi all,

Travelling on Eurotunnel in August, and planning on staying over at Canterbury P&R the night before.

I see they have 30 places for m/h's, do these get full or is there the whole remainder of the carpark to use?

Travelling from the far North with 2 kids, don't want to arrive and find that it's full. I know it closes at 8:00pm.

Ta!

There is a very big overflow car park on the RHS as you drive through the barrier.
We always use that even when the "normal" MH section has spaces. We find the overflow much quieter.
Have a good trip.

Why not just go straight to the tunnel, stay at Citi Europe, then you can get an early start, without having to get through the tunnel first.
Simply it's a 7-8 hour drive to Folkstone, so we're arriving the night before. Our crossing is now booked at 9:00am.

Canterbury P&R is well worth the visit. There’s a decent pub close by and if you have time, the bus into Canterbury is included in the price.
There should be plenty of room as pointed out above. The overflow car park is pretty level all over whereas the spaces in the dedicated area are on a bit of a slope.
Much nicer and quieter staying here than anywhere in Calais.

If you arrive late afternoon and leave early the next day you will have to pay for 2 days, so change tunnel booking to evening and stop at Citi Europe free

Max stay 48 hours.

Just be aware, one time we were at Canterbury part of the overflow parking was - overflowing with water! There was plenty of room on the dry bit but you'd have had to drive through the "lake". Of course may have just been a blocked drain.

Personally, even though we too have at least a seven hour drive, we tend to book the tunnel for early evening, when it's usually cheaper, then stay at Citie Europe which is only 5 mins from the Calais terminal.

BY the way it says it closes at 20:00 but when I arrived 30 may 2019, at 2030 the barrier just opens when you take a ticket and others arrived much later and did the same thing, so it would appear you don't have to worry about opening times.

I think the official opening times are up to 20:30. I can’t see any reason that cant be changed, it would make it much more convenient for those travelling a long way and arriving later.

That looks great but just wondering if there's anywhere suitable for an overnight stop closer to the tunnel around Folkstone?

The nearest is probably black horse farm c&m site, just round the corner , or c&cc has one near, not as cheap as canterbury p&r, but nearer and has all the facility’s you will need

Thanks for that but we've had a re-think and have decided to get straight over to France on the day we travel down and have the overnighter at cite de Europe which I believe is a very popular.
So........having never been there / or used it before whats the set up at cite de Europe? ie Is it just a large car park for overnight stops, and where is it in relation to the shopping center?

Ssssh.

That is not meant to be public - even the Parking Manager does not know, which is why I have not gone public although I knew.

It is correct that one night costs £7.00 but two nights cost £10.50(3 x £3.50)

Just follow the signs for City Europe and its really a very large roundabout with the shops/cinema in the middle. Just look for motorhomes on the outside edge and you can't go wrong, the Police station is behind it.
There is a fuel station on the way round as well 24 Hr with credit cards if you need any.
If you arrive before I think it's 22:00 Steaks & Shakes is open and the food is reasonably priced and really good (it's down by the Cinema).
ENJOY.

Brilliant and thanks. Well, things have moved on a pace in the last 10 mins and we've booked the 17:20 train from Folkstone through "Aferries" for £132 (non-refundable). Le Shuttle official web site wanted £211. So should be at Cite de Eurpoe for c7pm ready for a leisurely get away in the morning.
So can I pay on arrival / leaving ie barrier system? Is there an attendant you deal with or is it book online?

Citi Europe is free !

WHAT!!!! :D2 I thought that word had been removed from the dictionary!! Happy Days and thanks.

The parking is free; if you need to fill up at the service station, you will need a token from the Carrefour supermarket which is across the road from the parking. I think it closes at 8 pm so you will have time to get one, also you can stock up with food, etc.

We were there last week. Don't worry about places, its massive.

That's quite a saving, I don't think I've heard of anyone getting tickets for Eurotunnel significantly cheaper than the official site before.

Sparkling wine in carrefour €1.5 last time we were there and it's drinkable. ::bigsmile:

The only thing you might need a token for is water, when we were there in July I tried the tap and water came out so filled up (y)

Just checked the web site and a 17.20 crossing for Friday 30th August is £159. Have you booked your return crossing? We found it was very expensive just to turn up. If you don’t know when you are coming back, book a fictitious date, you can change it later online for a crossing anytime up to a year after the original booking, not crossing, date. Has to be done, I think, 24 hours before. Full details on the website.

And still lots of free aires in France!

Thanks and I’ve noted your comments. We’ve only booked one way as we’re meeting our daughter in Belgium and are not sure exactly when we’re returning. We’ll be returning together but at this time we’re not even sure if it will be tunnel or ferry - so just happy to book one way at the moment.
I get a bit worried about web sites that offer significantly reduced prices over the official web sites - what’s the catch??? But it all looks good and reviews are spot on so we’ll see how we go and will report back.

Not in France, loads of free places to stop ( I know people moan about prices of stuff in France but free stops and wine for less than 2€, can’t be to bad)
