Not every one needs or wants an expensive EV, some want a cheaper alternative. Ideal to take the kid's to school or even younger drivers to commute to college or work.
This car is not available in the UK yet, made by a Chinese company ORA (Greatwall group of companies) call the BLACK CAT R1.
However in 2022 ORA launch in the Uk with the ORA CAT, bigger than the R1 more luxurious but still under cutting the Renault Zoe.
Interesting watch.

Citroen Ami also coming to the UK in 2022 - supposed to be priced around £6k. ;) :giggle:

Yes, have looked at that, but only 28 mph and such poor range makes it unpractical for me or teenage kids, Ora's range 200 miles +
My daughter's reaction to the Ora was I want one!
The Ami, err no thanks, a scooter in drag!
The Ami just doesn't cut it in the style stakes which is so important for teenagers.

Yes, I've watched the ORA review video now and agree it does look and sound quite impressive. (y)

I think the reviewer was right to say there would be a ready market in the UK. You only need to look at how successful Dacia have been with their relatively no-frills, low-price cars. A lot of folk just want something reasonable and reliable at a good price to get around in. :giggle:

Thanks for posting the video!

Yes, but it’s Chinese. Trying hard to buy what we can from countries and manufacturers that respect human rights.

A funny thing happened to my wife last week taking my daughter and her friends on a shopping trip.
We run a very basic second car a Suzuki Swift, purchased last September, a car to run kids to school in to the centre of Cambridge.
Cost's were important and we didn't need anything super fancy.
The Swift is fantastic exceeded all expectations, cost £140 per month on pcp with £1000 deposit, cheap as chips.
Anyway the story goes like this, all thee girls (12 yr olds) sat in the back of the car.
My daughter's friends were feeling hot and wanted to open the rear windows, "were's the switch"
It was pointed out, no switch but a handle.
The next few minutes were spent winding up and down to giggles of laughter.
Much more fun than pressing a button!

I think most EV batteries come from China.
It did say in the vid their going to build them for Tesla 😳

Having watched the video. I just love the ethos behind the build, as simple as possible without all the 'fripperies', if it ever came to Britain I think it would sell very well, unless our crap retail industry decides to get off it's fat arse and start making stuff.

..and like he says, 0-60 in 3 seconds, really who gives a...? I grew out of that long ago.

I would really like to have a hybrid again but the cost of hybrids and electric cars are still way to expensive and l would never be able to buy one . If they want to bring about greener transport why don't they subsidise these more - or am l being greedy?

Having watched the video, the side hinged back windows reminded me of the original Renault 5 that had them. On mine the metal catch had to be re-superglued onto the glass more than once. The R5 best feature was the comfy long travel suspension, relaxing to drive on long journeys.

On the plus side the ORA has a mechanical handbrake and [kerb?] weight is under 1000 Kg.

No mention of a spare wheel and with such a tiny boot that is hardly surprising.

Yes, the front styling is a copy of the Honda E. Honda can't be selling that many in the UK at about £30K with limited range. Have you ever seen one on the road? It has loads of flashy tech like the full width digital dash and cameras instead of door mirrors, but seems way too expensive, and needs double the range.

As did the original Mini..
Ah, speaking of a Mini, Les; here's the new ORA Cat Gt-Line which costs about £30K and has a very good range with lots more tech goodies than its £50K+ rivals.

It looks small but it's actually the same size as a Mini Countryman.

I’ve just bought a 32,000 mile 8 seat Toyota Vellfire. 3.5 V6. Selectable 2WD/4WD

It can be used as a van, camper, car or people carrier.

£11,000

And I’ve got loads of money left over for petrol, even when we hit £2 a litre.

Electric cars are far too expensive

Following the concept of the original mini it might turn out to be a classic. I think the manufacturers have lost their way lately trying to make their products nicer and nicer adds to the cost, leaving mr average behind.

If you do 50-200 miles per day, for many people a leased EV will be cheaper than any petrol of diesel car.

Saw one of those in Albir, awful

It's a sans permis car in France, classed in the UK as a quadricycle. I can see a market here. Apparently lots of people have paid a deposit already when Citroen was testing the demand before deciding to bring it to the UK next year.

If I could no longer walk to the shops and needed a pure city car EV the Ami would be on my shortlist.

Very interesting.

It's ugly but looks aren't everything ..... and more / better styling may well come.

Once I no longer need a wheelchair adapted vehicle this could be a possibility but being made in China is a huge negative given their disregard for their own citizens and the environment (just my opinion).

I like a basic car - less to go wrong! BUT it has to be comfortable over a long journey and be fit for purpose. The two most common trips we do are the 8 miles each way to our nearest town / supermarket or the 120 mile each way trip to my parents (nowhere to recharge there). Less common would be 26 miles each way to either Berwick or Galashiels and just over 40 miles each way to Edinburgh. An ACTUAL range (in bad weather with lights and heater on) of 250 miles would be ideal.

The only problem with the citroën is it's top speed, even our scooter will do 50mph which is enough.

We were coming through France the other year with cruise control on on a straight A road doing about 50 or 60 mph when the van in front suddenly swerved round a sans permis car in front trundling along half in the gutter 😳 they're dangerously slow, the van would have smashed it to pieces 🤔

Does anyone have an idea what the convention costs are for a classic car turned to an electric one.

I wonder if that’s the way to go 🤷‍♂️

There's a whole load of owners on my EV forum who are complaining that their new cars with a manufacturers range of 300 miles are now only getting 200 in this cold weather.

Heaven only knows what miles they'll be getting in Jan and March when the weather hits the low period.

Also, there's a tonne of EVs coming to the market by Q1,2025 so my advice is to only buy now if you really-really-really need one, otherwise; wait a couple of years and let this new technology get 'de-bugged and refined' before the reliable stuff hits the market.

Our Peugeot has side hinge windows in the back :) But then the back doors are sliders so open really wide which is ideal for getting less abled bodied people in and out.

I'd be interested in that as well. Scraping a car with solid "underwear" and bodywork because it's not electric just seems wrong to me.

Blue Knight I've often wondered what the range actually is (rather than what has been claimed from standard conditions). I'm thinking that about 50% of the claim if the drive requires headlights and heater - maybe even less given the hills around here.

As did the original Mini..
And so did my brand new 2016 (?) petrol Citroen C4 Cactus. As well as being a dreadful car generally (too much to list here) my dog didn't like it as he couldn't stick his head out of the window. I only kept the Citroen for 6 weeks and 4 of those were spent looking for something else.
