Hi was wondering if any of you could recommend a section of the canal with small villages, nice tow paths for cycling, we will be returning from Costa Brava in July. Thank you for any advice on Aires too

We stayed at Camping Les Peupliers in Coumbier and road along the canal to Beziers - interesting lock system to watch en route. Near by is Etang de Montady - ( have a look at the irrigation scheme on google maps) :)

We did some of it last year. I have copied this from a post I did for someone else earlier this year.

Aire Buzet-Sur-Baise sur Baise - boat yard spot alongside canal lot et garonne nice spot cycling route. pay in port de plaisance or machine.

Valence d'Agen aire behind town which may seem dead but is a hive on a Tuesday market day . Free by side of canal for cycling.

Donzac just the road from Valence, free aire by pleasure fishing pond, good bread shop in village

Castelnaudary aire on side of canal very elaborate getting in system , when we were there they only wanted motorhome parking in the aire, out of season I suspect it is much less problematic. Right by side of canal du Midi.

Revel - very nice aire on outskirts of beautiful town with fantastic mediaeval square. Aire more like a small campsite with marked pitches etc ( ccard entry but easy(y) ). Great market on a Saturday, we cycled up to the lake that feeds the canal du Midi. Great tourist office in old market hall.

Puylaurens -nice little free aire in hills above canal with fantastic views of Pyrenees. Hilly cycling here but we loved it.

Hope this helps.

not long enough
we 'did' the canal in February this year, found out it is closed to navigation so effectively closed from Nov - end of Feb each year

didn't find many aires, and even fewer sites for that matter close to the canal

But did follow the advice above and used the aire at Castelnaudray, OK but quite a walk to the town (y):)

we found some lovely spots, even out of season, must be lovely when things are open

Plenty of aires alongside or very near the canal du midi, along with plenty of tolerated overnight parking up spots. Camperstop Europe includes lots. The section from toulouse to Carcassonne is almost all very good quality towpath. But be aware that the section to the south east of Carcassonne is mostly just gravel/rough path and in many stretches is quite challenging.

So sorry we have missed you, weather was not so good when we passed Il de Re ( I love it there) so we ended up in L Escala, staying on the Costa Brava until 1st week in July then heading to canal du Midi then Il de Re. Have a lovely holiday and enjoy all your upcoming family celebrations
