A small pump system used for a decorative fountain.
I‘ve put a continuous flow water feature in the garden, driven by a small capacity pump.(Think fish tank).
Supply is 240v to a transformer that reduces the voltage to, I think 4.5v
The 240 supply is difficult to get to, to enable to turn it off if needed.
Can I put a light weight switch into the lighter cable running from the transformer to the pump? This would mean the transformer staying live without a load on it. Will that work?
Cheers
Geoff.

Fit an Amazon / Alexa friendly plug to the 240V supply and turn it off remotely or with voice?

Yes it will work. Almost any switch will handle that load 👍just break the positive through the switch.

The simplest type of switch will work fine. Often listed as SPST (single pole single throw)

Always better to isolate the transformer, but where are you socket and transformer? What is the transformer IP rating, is the circuit protected by an RCD? I would expect the pump have some clear instructions or did you buy it “cheap“ online?

Hidden behind a post in the garden out of WiFi range.

Agree on isolating the transformer, but difficult to get to as at the top of garden. Circuit is on a separate rcd on the house fuse board.
No not cheap, good enough quality.
The transformer is in a Tupperware box sealed with rubber mastic so completely watertight.
The mains power lead is buried in the ground and was professionally installed, leading to outdooor sockets

Thanks. I’ll buy a decent quality one.

Sorry for the interrogation, but you would be surprised at what some regard as acceptable installation, sounds like you have had a proper installation. I would recommend a Quinetic remote switch and receiver but not cheap, if you go for the “simple switch” I would still recommend you use a switch designed for outdoor use.

Nought to be sorry for, appreciate the advice. Yes it will be a switch as per Richard n Ann designed for outdoor use.
