Well, the ferry is booked for 25th March - Newcastle to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam). We're planning to spend a couple of weeks getting from there to Slovenia. Probably not using motorways too much but will do if we need to.
So - any ideas of good places to visit, campsites etc in interesting places roughly along the route (which we haven't planned out at all yet).
Thanks.

Suggest you get the ACSI guidebooks with discount card. Over 3,000 sites offering fixed-price off season camping: €11, €13, €15, €17 or €19 all including: pitch for 2 people (and dog) with electric hook-up.

Price band depends on which sites you choose, but I think there are plenty along your route:

https://www.campingcard.co.uk/

We used a few on our trip to Austria last summer, but were mainly staying at naturist sites (and one or two of those are in the ACSI scheme ;) ).

If you've not used it before, the website might take a while to work out, but there are map-based site locators for all countries. You would need to buy the guidebooks, which include the discount card, which must be shown.

Sites are normally of a reasonable to good, or very good, standard.

You can get them (there are two books) from:

The Camping and Caravanning Club: https://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/travelabroad/campingcardacsi/

Caravan and Motorhome Club:
https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/overseas-holidays/special-offers/camping-card-acsi/

Vicarious Books

Or, directly from ACSI in the Netherlands

Dont forget the vignettes for Austria and Slovenia. We stayed in ACSI sites, and overnight stops in Aires and Stellplatzes. Campercontact, Bord Atlas, ACSI and All the Aires France should be enough to be going on with!

This is our trip to Croatia, we went through Austria and Slovenia and I've stated the sites we stopped at, but it runs to many pages, thanks to the interest shown by fellow Funsters! :D

If you don't want to read it all, we stayed at different sites on the way back up, so worth a quick read at both ends, even if you're not tempted with the Croatian section!

Thanks. We did think that we would end up in Croatia before coming home so I'll have a good read tomorrow. Just read a bit and loved your descriptions and photos.

We stayed at Camping Seespitze on Plansee in Austria (nr Reutte) last summer. Lovely views of the lake -able to launch our canoe from the site across a minor road. High summer was great weather but I suspect the time you are going it will be quite cold...
