I often see reference to campsites cherging for "Awnings"

the word is often used on forums to describe two things:-

a) wind-out sun/rain roof only protection.

b) a tent with walls adjacent to the MH/caravan.

When campsites charge, is it for either of these or just type b) ?

Geoff

Never get charged for one in Spain or Portugal just pay for the pitch and people and pets. Usually. That’s in winter using ACSI card(y)(y)

If (b), you might be able to just wind it out half way and pay in proportion (?)

I've just been on a UK site and been asked not to put the canopy out, to maintain the "6m rule"

Beware C&MC they have non awning pitches, seemed right that we should book that, they are the same price as full pitches but we thought we would be nice

Sod that we were perched on a grass corner plot barely big enough to fit on and paying full price

Asked to move to one of many empty full pitches, told we couldn’t as we had booked non awning

Did suggest we could just cancel, drive out and come back in and start again, they didn’t get that, we cancelled and were refunded our second and third nights, just put up with the crap pitch for one night

You vill do as you are told , or zer vill be consequences:D.
A little power goes a long way in either of the two main clubs.
A "finishing strip " between roof and wall of my van worked loose for a bout 3 feet on my way to a CC site . Whilst booking in I asked if I could borrow a set of steps, " can't do the ealf and safety don't allow it" . Offered to sign a disclaimer , nope no leaway . The pitch I was on had a three feet high fence between it and the next pitch . Two mins on top of the fence I was sorted . Jubilation was such that I felt I'd escaped fom Colditz.

Just to add a little balance here Kelpie, I had a similar problem to you on a C & MC club site. I asked the warden if I could borrow a step ladder and had a similar response to you.

However, the warden then went on to say " If I were to leave the ladder outside the office and it was still there when I checked a couple of hours later, I wouldn't know whether anybody had borrowed it in the meantime would I ?"

In fairness to the C & MC, I've worked in construction and facilities management for all my working life, and for many years now all our guys have been forbidden from either borrowing or lending ladders or any other sort of access equipment.

Blame the litigeous environment in this country if you want to blame anyone!

Any where that has wanted paying for a wind out awning or for a trailer ( that would be 'on pitch' I just turn around and walk out.. I am not even courteous enough to say goodbye.. rude I know but as far as I am concerned if they wanna try and make an extra few quid out of me for bugger all they are getting what they deserve
Had it Italy, Czechoslovakia, in Germany, France and Poland... After leving one place in Czechoslovakia we moved down the road a mile and pulled in to the next site. Chatting to the guy in the office he wanted all the details....I thought yerrrr..... you are gonna do the same !
Later in the evening he came over to us to say the matter had been reported to ( lost in translation but think it was the Czechoslovakian tourist board or some such ) , and the matter 'would be rectified' !

Think it is only b.

We sometimes go for non awning pitches but we are a PVC so don’t take up much room.

On the odd occasion when we have booked an “awning” pitch, in either of the two main Clubs, no-one has complained that we haven’t deployed a full awning.

I have a wind out canopy,,

Does this become an awning when and if sides are attached?

I’ve never been charged for wind out!

Whenever I am asked, "Do you have an awning?". I reply, "Just the wind out one on the side of the van". Always get the reply, "That doesn't count" (y)

Been charged for a trailer in Portugal, but told the car that was sat on it was free. So ,left the trailer outside ,drove the car in,they were happy with that.

8 years ago my son and his partner, who lived in Bristol, announced that they were going to get married a few months later. We went onto the CC (now C &MC) website to find the Baltic Wharf site fully booked up for that weekend. Having stayed there a few times (to visit son who was a project manager at the zoo) we knew that it got booked up at the start of the year when the booking system opened. We kept looking, almost on a daily basis for vacancies ((cancellations). Suddenly Thursday and Friday appeared so we booked them and about a week later Saturday and Sunday. Phew, all sorted with only about a month to go!
On arrival on the said Thursday, the warden informed me that the first two nights were on a non awning pitch and then we had to move to an awning pitch. With not wanting to use our (wind out) awning I asked if our first pitch was booked for the following night and I was informed that it was vacant. However, I was told that I would have to move at late Saturday morning to the new pitch. I explained that my son’s wedding was at 12.30. After a bit of humming and harring the warden said that I could use the pitch behind his cabin which was for the assistant warden when he was on duty. He then informed me that I could not use an awning the first two nights, but okay for the last two nights! The pitch was massive, so happy that we were now set up for the wedding. We would have been happy with anything as long as we didn’t have to move.
Wedding went very well, just using our van to sleep in as rest of time we were helping with the wedding. On the Sunday morning it was raining and as I wanted to get the bbq out I put the awning half out but put the legs into the wall brackets ie. not on the ground. Within a few minutes said warden came to tell me that I couldn’t have the awning out. I argued it was a canopy and was prepared to stand my ground on the issue. As far as I was concerned the wedding was over and if he was wanting to evict me then so be it. He went away.
On getting home I wrote to Head Office about the situation about awnings explains that a motor home with awning out was no wider than a caravan with car parked alongside, and all pitches were the same price. They said that if there was enough room to put up an awning then you can, and they would speak to the warden.
Son and his new wife left Bristol a month later and so we have not been back the Baltic Wharf since.

Good on you, far too many times the people running these sites have no flexibility at all.

It sometimes it makes you think that a clumsy surgeon must have performed a common sense by-pass operation on some people.:rolleyes:

Richard.

We also have never paid extra for awning, trailer or Harleys and if asked would go somewhere else. If it all fits on the pitch don't see what the issue can be. :)

Concerning site wardens, I would think they are just implementing the organisations rules and not making them up as they go along. The use of ladders has become a major H&S issue now so I can understand why the clubs are not happy to loan one. Take your own as we do, fits neatly on the trailer.

Mick

Interesting reading, I've never considered our wind out blind/shelter thingy as an awning.

Well my OP seems to have opened up a can of worms as to how different campsites treat the word 'awning'

Has anyone seen a definition in the T&Cs of either Club, or any other campsites? It would avoid confusion and arguments if they did.

We have a wind-out canopy over our house terrace and we refer to it as an awning. I am not sure but I think most shops who make and/or sell them would also refer to a wind-out as an awning.

Totally agree with you , but , I was at more risk standing on the fence. We've become American , we don't talk to each other now in a dispute , it's talk to my lawyer:D.

as the pitches are the same price wise, we try to book with awning as they tend to be a bit bigger.....i think?.......
